Our On30 club recently decided to expand the layout by adding small corners to provide a more interesting run aside from running around an oval all the time. The first image is the current layout configuration. The next three images illustrate some options we will have, including a "getaway space" on the interior that will be behind a high backdrop. We will be able to stage trains also. On Saturday we held a work party to lay the scenery base and track (another member had already constructed the four modules). Two small corner modules will be the responsibility of members, the other two the club. I have started a little scenic contouring to help finish these off. The images are in the next posting immediately following this message. Scott

This is the second time we have been set up on that stage and the lighting is terrible for sure. It seams like that really has been the only place that is that bad.

Scott is correct in the amount of stuff we seam to take with us. I know I take a lot of stuff and don't seam to use half of it. I am working on reducing the load.

Fun setup for sure, little dissapointed in the lite turnout, but a great chance for us to set up and show our stuff.

Regarding wandering hands.....we have been very fortunate at all our events. Occassionally there is a child whose parent does not think to pickup the kid and they try and pull themselves up on the layout, but still no real damage. No trains on the floor yet.

Bad lighting or not, the layout looks great. Any issues with children-young or old-touching or putting their hands were they shouldnt be?
scott robertson Posted - 11/14/2011 : 7:40:16 PM
Yeah, we have been talking about individual lighting for sometime now. We will probably discuss more in the future. Something lite and cheap is needed. Just more stuff to coordinate. You should see us setting up. I think Patton's army moved with less stuff. Scott

Bill,

I would go one better and suggest LED lighting- not only are they very lightweight and draw little power, but they illuminate pretty well.

Scott, thanks for sharing the pictures. I never get tired of seeing those modules in action.

Scott since you are using fabric as a sky you should be able to integrate a light support system into it. I used 5' long pieces of conduit bent into an L and attached to the modules with pipe clamps. I spanned them with 1x2 attached with pipe clamps and clamped on cheap work lamps with 60 watt bulbs (have to use CFLs now I guess). Made the layout stand out in that dark corner of the display hall.

Wonderful pictures, and wonderful modelling. Thanks for sharing, Scott.

Attached are some photos from our last set up at the Roseville, CA Rial Fair November 2011. Unfortunately, the lighting where we were placed was worse than bad. Sorry about not being able to highlight everybody who contributed most photos were too dark. Our layout was 30-ft x 13-ft. and was well received by the people who attended. Everybody had a good time and we only had a few incidents of running trains together (we were operating 3-trains at once most of the time). Scott

Joe,

I asked the person who made those up if I could post them, he didn't want them out on the web so I have to honor his request.
Got my Daughter working on another version, if she does it I will post it.

Great looking layout and those small corners are neat.

John: any chance of posting the "please don't touch" labels? I would like to make some for my modules. Thanks, Joe in Morgan Hill CCCModOn30

Very nice setup guys.

We do not have a formal scenery standard although we try to have some scenic continuity. Some members are new to the hobby, so this is a good training ground, others are into electronics and still others into collecting and model building. Overall a very diverse group with a lot to share. We do dictate rail size, track type and electrical connection. Scott

Looks great Scott ! Do you have an agreement of sorts to blend in the sceneries on the various modules ? I gather rail location and electrics follow a protocol (?)

Do like the 45° modules, they add a new 'dimnesion' if you know what I mean.

cheers, Leo.
