Motivated by Karl I decided to start this one, let's go straight to the point, the challenge is:

Make a Rolling Stock or Motive Power piece out of paper/card stock

Now for some details, the challenge is to have paper has one of the main materials in construction, since we are dealing with mechanical components it's acceptable the following:

Motive power: The power unit, wheels, chassis and the mechanics can be the usual, paper should be used for the structure itself and every other thing you think of.

Rolling stock:Chassis and wheels can be standard material, the rest should be made out of paper/card

Time frame: It starts now and ends on Feb 14th 2011.

The challenge is not scale specific.
Progress pictures are more than welcome.

Since this this will probably be a challenge with less participants than usual we will only set up a final pictures thread if required.

Just to get you guys going, here is a link to Clever Models page where you can get some ideas. [Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated with Clever Models and I'm linking because is relevant to the challenge]:

Guys, I just started a thread on computer controlled, digital die cutting. I'm gathering knowledge and information and will also share any I gain. As of right now I think theres a very good chance that these machines will change how we model.

Hi Thom, you can have the picture in your server and post a the image here, just past the full address of the picture in the image tags. Also you can put a link direct to the picture if you want to.

I am trying to upload a pic and having no luck. I have looked at the instructions for uploading via firefox and the sample screens look nothing like what I see here. ? Cant post my web page because I get accused of advertising.
very frustrating.

Thanks for the extension. That works for me, too. Another week or so and I'll Rosie's ready for show and tell.
nalmeida Posted - 02/15/2011 : 05:40:27 AM
I also will need an extension and since there's still work in progress the new deadline is:

14 March 2011

This will be the only extension, after this we'll have to move on :) !

Shame on me. I believe I could use an extension. Any one else. i do have an excuse. I'm launching a new product and got behind on my work.

Well, I got farther along with the drawings for the third generation build, but real-life in Mundania got in the way this past week. So, I'll not make the deadline, tonight.
How about the rest of ya? Where's the pix of your finished pieces?
Nelson? Is your new loco careening down the pike?
Thom? Your Transit car?
Russ? I believe you were banging on a boxcar.
Cody? Your SR&RL flanger?
Hey, Mike O! Where's that ancient interuban?
Several of us were working on that Monson Snow Plow freebie kit. How about some pix?

I got a little farther along with the 2nd generation of Rosie's and posted some pix. Scroll down the page for the latest WiP.

Nelson,

I like your the locomotive idea. I'm anxious to watch you build it in paper.

That is very nice, Nelson!
I too, am looking forward to seeing it come alive.

Nice drawings, Nelson. I hope you'll be able to show us more in the time of the challenge - and later if not.
nalmeida Posted - 01/28/2011 : 6:12:21 PM
Well, as always I'm a late starter, and I also haven't done anything yet, but planning is underway. Since I'll be laser cutting my paper/card there's still hope in starting before the end of the time frame!

So, first the subject. At work I'm trying to build a small HOe layout to show my mates what's this hobby all about, I love Egger-Bahn type of locomotives and since I don't want to spend that much money on this I decided to try and do a locomotive out of paper for this layout.

I already drafted my plans on Corel Draw and after that I sketched them in Sketchup, this is how far I got, first the card/paper parts:

Together with the drive unit (A Bachmann N scale Plymouth Switcher):

And now everything together:

Let's see how far can I go with this one!

Yep, I gotta get cracking! Income taxes and FAFSA are all over my modeling table, but will be out the door soon!
