Posted - 11/20/2010 : 2:14:09 PM Hi everyone, I would like to take you on a tour of my tribute to MikeC the "Chambers Parts Store". Mike has been running this store for years, and has a reputation for finding any part or piece you might need for your automobile. If Mike does not have it in stock, he can have it for you in a week.

Let's have a look around the place shall we, it seems to be a slow day for Mike and the boys.

Mike purchased the building from Ezra Cooper back in 1924 with the hopes of building a newer shop. But this darn depression came along and put a stop to those plans. He has been able to keep the place going but just. Here is a photo of Mike watching the world go by on this slow day.

Mike lets the local boys like the twins up the street Allan & Alex come over to the shop. To see what they can salvage from the scrap he has laying around. Last week they found a old hood ornament and mounted it on their push cart.

The twins have stopped in again this day to see what they might find. But today they found something they were not looking for. Trouble with a capital T Billy O'leary better known as Bully O'leary. They had just come around the tire pile and quicker then lighting O'leary jumped out and grabbed Allan. And before the two had time to think he flipped Allan over his head and into a pile of tires trapping him down inside them.

All Alex could do was watch in horror as his brother was put into this predicament by Billy.Alex only thought now was to run through the hole in the fence and get Mike's help. As he ran away he could hear the muffled screams of his brother, and the laughing of Billy. By the time Alex returned with Mike, Billy was gone and Mike pulled Allan out of the tires. He was okay but would not forget this ordeal he had been through in a long time. Now let's get back to having a look around.

Lets see what under the roof.

Mike tries to keep his shop fairly clean.

Well I seem to have lost track of the time. Mike is just getting ready to close up the store for the night.

Let's have one last look around while Mike locks the place up.

Well that's it I hope you enjoyed the tour of Chambers part store. And a big thank you to Mike, for being a great host and for this great place you have made for us to visit and hang around and share stories with one another!

Posted - 10/23/2012 : 10:05:13 PM Thanks very much Neil, for your kind thoughts about my tribute build for MikeC. It was a fun challenge to try & turn the photo into a 1/87th scale model. And the figures that Dallas Mallerich, so generously painted for the scene, "Polly & Vera " were the icing & cherry on top, to complete the scene!

Posted - 10/23/2012 : 9:14:11 PM I don't know how this got past me without a comment but it did. I found the duplicate of this post on another site which referred me to RRL.
I've had the original pic (Shorpy) on my desktop for about two years. It's been categorized as a 'maybe' future project. I love what you did with it.
The colors you used make the original come to life without it being out of character. The figures add to the fidelity of the model rather than detract which they usually do.
Wonderful job. |

Posted - 04/21/2012 : 10:45:51 PM Thanks for the nice words Frederic & Bob and Dallas too! Dallas,it really has been a lot of fun! First watching you modify the original Woodland Scenics figures. Into what would eventually become Polly & Vera. And then also providing along the way, a fantastic lesson in how we can attempt this kind of work on figures ourselves. I used the word attempt because, I think my Wally & Vern figures now need some extra work to keep up appearances with the gals. That's okay, practice makes perfect! Right! Dallas, anytime you want to swap details in the future, just let me know! Hmmm... currently I don't have any structures with only 2 walls and a floor.

The junk, clutter and details are all wonderfully executed and neatly (and often "not so neatly") placed ... and all in HO ... wow! Give yourself a big pat on the back. I'm sure MikeC is getting a real big kick out of this one!
Here's a repost of my comments from the first page of the thread ... and I've felt this way all along. An amazing job of turning a single view of this classic structure into a very plausible 3D environment ... and the efforts that you and Lance Russworm undertook to ensure that the Chambers name would fit the original style are further icing on the cake.

I just kinda' miss not seeing the two ladies in the photo at your garage. Such a fine tribute to Mike. I know he would approve.
Evidence that Dave Mason is to blame for the long delay in posting the final pix! I was so fascinated by all the detailing that I overlooked the people in the scene ... but once Dave pointed those out, it did become "obvious" even to the most-dense among us. So a definite "thank you" to Dave, whose observation sparked a very interesting and enjoyable challenge!

It's been an absolute pleasure working with you to add a couple of little bits to this fine scene ... and, indeed, this forum provides a wonderful place to visit, relax, find inspiration and make friends on a daily basis. There's at least one more very slow-moving Chambers Challenge project to go ....
Meanwhile, a reminder to all to re-visit the main Chambers Challenge threads, where you'll find links to more great projects:

And Mike Chambers home page with some great projects, modeling ideas and tutorials: http://homepage.mac.com/michael21/CMShome/cmshome.html
And despite the length of this post, I'm still at somewhat of a loss for what I really want to say, but I think this comes pretty close:

Posted - 04/21/2012 : 11:56:11 AM Hi everyone! I have great news,Polly & Vera have arrived in Canada at last! These 2 ladies in case you don't know, were a gift from Dallas Mallerich. I had jokingly said something about Dallas sculpting up for me these 2 ladies. And it turned out great for me, because he actually did it! They arrived at the start of this week, but I've been so busy at work I have not been able to photograph them in front of the Chambers Parts Store until now. Polly & Vera look fabulous! The level of craftsmanship that has been put into these 2 little ladies is even more amazing in person.I thank you again Dallas for the time & effort that you put into these little gems! It's a bit rainy & overcast today, I was hoping for a nice sunny day to photograph them in their proper places according to the original "Walker Evans" photo that this whole place was based on. So without any further delay I present to you Polly & Vera together in their rightful places at the Chambers Parts Store.

Here again is the original Walker Evans photograph to compare with.

And my black & white version of the same photo.

Here are some close up shots of the girls, first up Polly.

And Vera.

And one last photo of all of them together with their new found friends Wally & Vern.

It's funny how 2 little figures can have so much meaning for me, but they do. They represent what this forum is all about! The sharing of time and skills & even techniques with each other, is what really makes this forum a great one. And in that spirit Mike Chambers, would be really be proud of this gift from my friend Dallas Mallerich in honouring his memory & this great forum which he helped to make for all of us.
Thank you again Dallas & Mike Chambers!

Posted - 04/01/2012 : 12:48:33 PM Dallas, I agree with Polly, It has been a hoot! And I thank you again for the very generous gift of your time & your talents! These 2 gals will be my favorite LP's ever! And your funnies, are always great to read. I keep thinking in the back of mind that these things could be turned into children's books. "The Adventures of Mudgeon" The un-painted version & Now the new & improved painted version. I pray the gals will make it through Canadian customs without being paint stripped searched.
Your pennyless Canadian friend! Greg Shinnie |

Final prep: After months of deep thought, playing with crayons and intense self-reflection ... I've carefully selected two complimentary colors for the shipping crates. In an effort to simplify this complex process, the colors were chosen from colors on hand. After intense deliberation, Model Master Light Earth and Dark Tan were selected for the base colors. Give me another six months to work out the trim colors ... and a few more months after that to determine the best method for drilling air holes, and they'll be on their way!
Thanks to Greg: -- For the wonderful doghouse! -- For allowing me to trample all over his thread. -- For a never-ending stream of informative demos, constant humor and the occasionally torturous pun. -- For considerable patience.
I know he's been waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting ... to post his final pix in the Chambers Challenge thread, and I'm sorry it's taken so long to get to this point. If it's any consolation, there will be at least one other entrant who will be much, much later in doing that!
Meanwhile, please join me in wishing the gals a bon voyage, safe passage thru the customs office and a happy life in their new home.
(Edit: Just realized what the date is ... yes, I'm joking around with the cartoons ... but, no I'm not kidding about the gals ... they really are packed up and ready for travel! No foolin') |

Well, if I had a little more time available, you'd be seeing a dirty Mudgeon stare with a "funny" caption! Now, IIRC, T gauge is 1/450 or thereabouts, so I may actually have some good news. Eduard in the Czech Republic makes PRE-PAINTED photo-etched figures in 1/450 scale. For example: http://www.hlj.com/product/GNZGE-007
Sure, PE figures are flat ... but at that size, just be happy that they're prepainted and human shaped! I just got one of the 1/35 sets from Eduard that includes pre-painted photo-etched butterflies ... amazing stuff. |

Well, just to let ya know that I haven't forgotten the New Year's Resolution ... the most horribly dreaded part has been tackled and I've done the best I can to paint yet another teeny-tiny HO face.
She stands looking down as shown at left ... so the view at right is what the fender of the car would see looking back up at her!
Pretty simple from here ... give some shading to the dress and hands, touch-up the bits I've buggered while working on the face.
Greg ... are you still at the address that I've got on Sparky's doghouse shipping box? (Once the painting is finished, I'll let the paint harden a week or two before shipping ... so it's still a bit of a wait!)
PS -- To any of my other nutty friends who may need custom figures ... please feel free to switch to a LARGER scale before contacting me! (In fairness to Greg, I should point out that I actually volunteered for this lunacy. I still find this build extremely inspiring and really look forward to seeing the gals where they belong!)
thats wonderful dallas! i only ever painted a few HO figures and found them a pain, the fact you made her so well and painted just as great is a true sign of your modelling skills.

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 09:19:47 AM They say, "that good things come to those that wait".Well I think that Dallas has just proved this old saying once again, with Polly & Vera. Figures he has so kindly crafted, sculpted & painted for my Chambers Parts Store.Thank You! Yes Dallas, I am still at the same address on the package I sent you. I look forward to meeting the girls in person and photographing them in their proper places on my diorama. Heck maybe I will take them on a sight seeing tour of Canada! Thanks very much again Dallas for your excellent demonstration in making & painting these gals/figures up. They are going to a good home Dallas. I will be reminded of this gift and the man MikeC who brought us all together here on this great forums everytime I see them.

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 08:02:36 AM This is one of those builds which is a true "classic", so well done that we all can relate to it somehow. And what is really cool here is the spirit of the modeling community to continue to add additional talent to Greg's outstanding build. Thanks Dallas for your contribution in bringing this thread back to the forefront so that some of the newer modelers can enjoy yours and Greg's outstanding modeling. A wonderful gift to us all. |
