Okay, 2010 participants, this will be the thread we use to post pictures of our visiting cars.
Our cars should first hit the road in late March for an April 1st arrival.

That is the L&N Station in Mineral Bluff GA. Its pre 1900. The Station is on the Murphy Branch just up from Murphy Junction. Its also not far from Blue Ride GA and Copperhill TN. The layout is further along than any of those pictures show. They can run some trains. The layout has some structures and scenery and some of the track is ballasted. I have been helping build structures.
We are working on structures for Copperhill TN. I am working on the Tennessee Copper Company store called the Smelters Store.

Accurail couplers are Ok but they are plastic and loose their shape and ability to couple over time. Kadee metal couplers, being metal, will not loose shape or ability to couple except when you lose the spring. Then you replace that. If you want to use the Accurail couplers for the interchange that's fine. I did say equivalent and they are knuckle couplers.
I use Intermountain wheel sets. Kadee, Rix and Proto2000 make them also. Intermountains are great for Accurail cars. That's what I use.
Nice clubhouse. Is that along the L&N or Central of Georgia RR?
I suggest you make the load stable by gluing it together. Loose loads don't ship well. I have used a piece of foam and glued coal, ballast and limestone loads to it.

And also my friend's layout if we get it cleaned up and a bit of scenery built. It's the West Virgina and Maryland belonging to WVM_nut(Ed Sumner).
Bill will the couplers that come with the Accurail kit be ok on your layout or do I need to get the real Kadee #5s? I don't want you to have to supply me with couplers. What kind of metal wheel sets that can be bought separately are a good value? The kit has plastic ones. I don't know if the TSMRI club has a car scale or not. I have been needing to get one.
The commodity I plan on shipping is crushed slag from the loader that was at Copperhill TN. The slag can be used as ballast, gravel, and as a concrete block additive. The load will not be actual slag as much of it is magnetic. I found this out when I picked up a couple of pieces of slag that had been used as ballast a few miles away from Copperhill on the L&N railroad. At that location a bit of the older cinder and slag ballast was showing mixed in with the regular CSX granite that had covered most of the right away.

Jon,
First you build and HO layout. Naw, just kidding. ALL of us are in HO. If you want to join next year and you don't have an HO layout you can still participate. Do you have friends layout that is HO that he/she may be willing to let you operate the HO cars on? How about an HO club in the area? Two years ago mine got operated on the Tehachapi layout when the visiting Simon brought it down on an operating night when he and his boys were there. Check out 2009 interchange about 2/3's the way through. So it is possible. Another thought occurred to me is you could just watch your car on other layouts but you wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing them in person operate on a layout.
Rolling Stock Interchange Program
Operating Guidelines
The Interchange Program is open to anyone who has been an active, contributing member in good standing of the Railroad Line Forum for at least 3 months.
1. Rolling stock involved in the exchange remains the property of the original owner, and participants are NOT to make any changes in parts, modify, weather, or paint another member's model unless approved by the owner.
2. Damage from shipping, from wear & tear, or from an accident while in the possession of another member must be reported to the owner immediately. If the model is damaged after it is in possession of a participating member, a plan for the repair will have to be submitted to and agreed upon by the owner. All repair parts and associated expenses will be the responsibility of the member in possession at the time the damage was incurred.
3. It is strongly suggested that a model be packed tightly in a regular kit box so it won't move. That box should be wrapped in bubble wrap and placed inside another box with surrounding plastic peanuts or adequate packing material and then well taped with packing tape. Models should be sent out first class mail...not expensive for a small, light box - insurance optional. This shipping box should be retained by the recipient for use in re-shipping the car to the next member of the group.
4. Failure to return, report damage to, or abuse of another member's model will result in expulsion from the group.
5. Models should be shipped on or close to the date released by the coordinators of the program. Approximately one week notice of the shipping date will be provided to group members.
6. The activities of the group are in no way connected with RR-Line.com, its owners, administrators, and moderators. Participation in this group is strictly voluntary and each participant assumes all liability for loss or damage to their own property.
7. Participation in the Interchange Group as a member constitutes agreement with these guidelines.
The group preferences are: Kadee metal #5 knuckle type or equivalent couplers (they can be the newer scale head couplers which is my standard), ((Note: When the come to my railroad your car will get #5's for the rest of the journey though the interchange if it doesn't have them. I have spares.)) metal wheel sets in NMRA gauge, weighted to NMRA specs for the car. For a twin open hopper like yours the car should weigh at least 3 ounces or 1 ounce plus 1/2 ounce for each inch of body length. You can always put the weight under a 'fake' load or use the load for the additional weight. Weighted cars always track better. These are preferences.
What is mandatory is you have 'fun' with this. Photos of the cars' journey shows everyone where your car goes when it arrives on a participating layout. Stories like you've read are welcome to. It increases the interest I think.
That about covers it. Hope to see your car in the interchange next year Jon.
P.S you could always build an HO module to take photos on and operate the HO cars on. Just a thought.

Hi Folks;
I am thinking about joining the 2011 interchange and have been wondering about what kind of standards need to be complied with in regard to Kadee couplers and metal wheels weight and things like that? I model in N scale so I am not familiar with how HO scale cars are set up. I have an HO Accurail USRA 55-ton open hopper that I am thinking about sending. I got it special from a friend of mine to send on the interchange and it is the only HO scale car I own. I'm looking forward to any suggestions you all might have.

Nice parting photos of the cars on home rails Bruce and John. The 2010 season is indeed over. I have a great time with the cars, and watching them travel on all your layouts. I look forward to next years interchange to.
Pete- Missed you this year buddy. Hope you get into it next year.

Just got back from my jaunt over to Captain Jack's to check on reports of the lobster car's
return to the Valley. Low and behold, there it
was in all of it's glory, although there were no lobsters in the car.!!!
It's been a wonderful Interchange 'season' and I'll be anxiously awaiting next spring and the beginning of the 2011 Interchange program.

Nicely done, folks! 
I've enjoyed watching this year, although I would have enjoyed participating far more! There is light at the end of the tunnel, though, and I hope to be out of the layout carpentry business before Christmas, and back to modeling a nano-second after that!
Maybe next year....

I got these shots approaching the main yard of the Jersey Highlands Railroad yesterday.
The Old Woman is on her home rails for the first time in many months.
She has traveled just over 6000 miles since she was last home. (I figure around 6035 miles.) The shortest leg of the trip was the 35 miles between Vermontville, Michigan and Dewitt, Michigan. The longest leg was the almost 1800 miles between Deltona, FL and Sugar City, CO.

Had to just add the few shots now that my computer is back up again , thank god for that CD back-up I made.
Got all them photos I took before I mailed out the last car. wwhhhhhhuuuuuu.
Its been a great interchange this year.Just wanted to throw in a few more since this was my favorite car and I ordered one for the NYRR hope it gets here soon .
And also this being the end of this layout that never got completed ..o well but with another kid coming home what can you do ...... |
