Vincent Lake Short Line 3rd. Edition

Last June I removed all my track work and roadbed of the old Vincent Lake Short Line. I was not happy with the layout.

Yesterday I began the new VSLS ... pictures to follow ....

another for 14"

I vote for 14" too, Tom.
Tommatthews Posted - 08/27/2012 : 09:12:02 AM
My eye level is 66". The top of the opening in the box is 63". Unless I take my layout apart I cannot raise the table height.

Lots to think about ...

Tom,

I really like the shadow box effect but I do have a concern with the height you selected. You said that your layout is low and my concern is that a 14" opening height will restrict the view to the back of the shadow box for the average height person. Me being on the short side probably won't have that problem.

As for building material choices I would go with 1/4" Masonite on the front (smooth finish) and 3/8 plywood on the sides and top. As for lighting there is a lot of choices in florescent lights that have a wide range of colour spectrum. Another option is LED Strip lighting. I recently bought some at Ikea for 12.99 each that has potential. While they don't match my 5000K florescent lights there is no blue in the light emitted. Just some ideas and food for thought.

Like the boxed concept !
Geezer Posted - 08/26/2012 : 7:23:04 PM
Got it!
The pine tree kits are nice looking trees, I have a few of the bags....
I do not have any experience with the deciduous trees, but can say
that I think the colors are a bit "BOLD" for me, JMO.....Maybe they
would be alright if you can tone down the colors.....damifino!

Geezer,

I PM'd you on some Scenic Express trees for comments.

Great start Tom!
Yeah, I like the smaller opening too.
For lighting, might I suggest using the
smaller "under the cabinet" type lights? You know, like
about 3/4 inch around and 24"-30" ling.....
Also, on the opening, like Les says, you have to consider the background -
Rock size, any structures and "TREES"....the height of the trees
will determ ine how high the rock formations can be without making
the top of the trees bent over on the top of the module.....JMO

Les, Ron, Larry and Rick,

This is a winter project so I don't want to finish it in a day (Like I could). I need to figure out how to frame the front, sides and top. Lighting?

What type of sheeting do I use? What is the theme of the two modules? Fall setting?

Each module will be 48" long with a 40" x 14" opening. One decision made ..

Lots of questions ...

Tom,
If the point of view is as you presented it in the last picture, I would go for the 14ish opening too. Of course the more you work the back ground, rocks, trees, hill flats the better.

Remember you are doing the same thing as in a picture being framed on the wall. Also what you are doing is what we have done in Museums for years.

Your plan works so far...if you were Aussie vice Canadian, you would have it all done by now..but thats the way they work. Those down under boys sure do know how do do these.

Going by the pictures you posted I like the 14" opening better.
Rounded corner look good to me.
Tommatthews Posted - 08/26/2012 : 12:05:57 PM

View 3 ( 16" opening height)

View 4 ( 14" opening height)

Tommatthews Posted - 08/26/2012 : 11:19:08 AM
Les,

We will be at birds eye for me as I cannot raise the base any higher. There will be sides (boxed in) for each module. There could be tunnels, trees, rock cuts or buildings hiding the connection between two modules. The rounded sides could be kept or changed to square. This is scrap lumber. The fronts will be painted a dark green, brown or black. I think the height of the opening could be reduced to 14".

I'll place a couple of structures and trees to see what it looks like, take some pictures and report back.
