Introducing My 3'x6' Nscale layout that I have been piddling on since 1992 and built the bench work in 9th grade woodworking class in 1983. It has been moved so many times I have lost count maybe a dozen times. These construction pictures taken about 1995 are the first ever taken of the layout. The layout is based on the Scenic and Relaxed in Atlas' "Nine N Scale Model Railroads" by John H. Armstrong and Thaddeus Stepek printed 7/1973. Hopefully I can get some inspiration and motivation going and make some progress.

Some guys talked about using carpenters pencil on the track to keep it clean. It was a bad idea for me. I think they were mostly in On30 scale and had no grades on their layouts. For me the track corroded anyway and just gunked up my locomotive wheels. I also had traction problems. I have a special abrasive block that works good but it leaves abrasive debris on the track that have to be vacuumed up. It is a lot softer than my 30 year old bright boy. The bright boy is like a rock now. People say that bright boys scratch the track and scratches collect dirt sooner but I haven't seen it.

I finally worked on the layout. Sometime back I laid track across the gap shown in the photo three posts up. About a month ago I dusted and vacuumed a thick layer of dust off the layout. Today I vacuumed a bit of dust and soldered and wired in six feeders. I am using wire nuts to attach the feeders under the layout so I can remove the turnouts with the feeders still attached if need be. Then I cleaned the track and ran a train all the way around for the first time in three years. Had to clean the locomotive wheels several times. The gunk wouldn't come off with my Minitrix wheel cleaning brush so I held a screwdriver against the wheels while running the locomotive on the wheel cleaning brush. The screwdriver scraped the gunk right off and polished up the wheels nicely. While I was running the train I found a dead turnout that needs feeders soldered to it.

No sooner than I get the track hooked back together and run a train around a few times then I pull the track up to make some changes.
Here I am going to put in a switch back spur to a mine tipple and the acid plant.

Jon if you are happy with it then don't change it. On the other hand if you are only O.K. with it then give change some consideration. My biggest concern would be if you have the room for all those buildings as well as the required support areas (parking, access roads, and what have you).

I have had some helpful suggestions that my track plan is turning into a spaghetti bowl, but I think the layout has evolved into an industrial one with lots of industry spurs. There will be a couple of copper mine tipples, a copper smelter, and an acid plant with tank car loading facility. With spurs for all of those and a twice around main line I guess the layout is turning into a spaghetti bowl, but I guess I am ok with that. This topic shows some of the mine head frames and acid plants and smelters that I am using for inspiration:

Construction update. I got the layout cleaned up some and a bit of track relayed and hopefully improved so here are some progress photos:
