As promised, here's a couple pictures of my latest mini layout project:

Overall:

The oval is Marklin sectional track that came with the starter set (which I bought to get the 0-6-0 mechanism for my Porter project).

Scratchbuilt tunnel portal:

Kitbashed Atlas viaduct:

And the lines only piece of motive power:

It's a Toma Model Works kit powered with a Marklin 0-6-0. There's a thread about building it here: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17565

The name Ferrocarril de Ixtaccíhuatl just means Ixtaccíhuatl Railway in Spanish, and Ixtaccíhuatl is the tallest mountain in Mexico. I set it in Mexico so I could try some adobe buildings and palm trees...!

I'll post progress as it happens

Now that's funny! You're right OKT. He probably is too young. Just teasing, Snappy.

Wow Cody, that's looking really good! I spent the past weekend working on structures for my mini. Next weekend, scenery. Thanks for the inspiration. Nice little 2CV!

Nice job on the scenery, Cody.

What style were you thinking for the hotel - adobe, stucco type thing with a haicienda sorta courtyard? Arches under the balconies?

I think the hotel, for that sorta construction, is too tall, but the footprint looks fine.

Maybe you could get a bit of a tower going on, like this:

Ixtaccíhuatl is very near Mexico City and over 5km tall (I've climbed it). The active volcano Popocatepetl is part of the range. The two massifs are connected. It is the third highest mountain in Mexico, and the seventh highest in North America. The locals call it Ixta. It's also known as Snow White (actually the strict translation is "White Woman"). It's an extinct volcano and seen from the right spot the various peaks and cols create the image of someone sleeping. Ixta's prince is Popocatepetl.

--Rich B.

Hey Rich,
That's an excellent geography lesson... and very accurate. I've spent a lot of time in the Mexico City area (my wife is from Mexico City), and I can vouch for your lesson... Ixta is also know as "the sleeping woman" - ie, since it is the dormant volcano.

So, how about the pronounciation for Popocatepetl ??

Try it like this: po-po-ka-tep-eh-tal

I can't tell you how many times my wife made me practice these kinds of words to finally get them right !!

If I remember right, Popo is the highest mountain in Mexico, Ixta is the third highest, and there is a volcano in Toluca, Mexico (about 45 minutes to the West of Mexico City) that is the second highest peak - called Nevado de Toluca - at about 14000+ feet.

I've only been to the top of this one. In the crater is a lake and the remnants of an old rock house that someone actually tried to live in at one time. But the weather on top of these mountains is quite unpredictable. In the middle of July, with a temperature of 80+ degress at "normal" elevation (6800 feet in Toluca), I've see the top of the Nevado de Toluca covered in snow.

It's not uncommon to see Ixta covered in snow too, but not Popo - it's too hot !!

Thanks again folks,

As promised, a couple new photos!
Yesterday I worked on the retaining walls and bumper for the standard gauge line, which is just a big pile of dirt (I'm not sure why the coloring came out so weird):

Another view:

I also made a mock up for a depot/hotel (the larger building on the right) and the plaza 'flat'. The depot/hotel looks too big to me, what do you folks think? As it is, it's three floors and I was thinking of having balconies on the top two floors on the shortest wall..?

I also added a bit more of the road in front of the narrow gauge track...
