after a couple weeks of trying to find something, i desided to build the 4 boulder valley models wooden boxcars i have.

the idea is to build one as rather tatty, and in need of a repaint/rebuild, right up a nearly new boxcar each will have a different number on each side, basicly doubling the amount of stock i can show on my layout, should be fun.

where is where i started the other day

lets see where i am latter..

Hi eric, welcome to the forum!

good question, i dont know what it is, but its rust-oleum surface primer i *think* it is acrylic, but its the only primer ive found that has alot in the can (but will run out of paint before aerosol) and dry very flat, even if i sprey too much and it clogs on a certain part of a model. if i remember right it goes
primer.
tan washes on random boards
brown washes on random boards.
A.I. till i was happy with the color, anything from 5 heavy washes and up. till it looked right really.

thank you very much, i am quite proud of the results, concidering i used the wood method once before, on a single barrel, and the dry brushing cheat for board by board on an outhouse before, worked out very well on something larger.

if you have ago please post, we'd all like to see. :D

These are fantastic. I do have 2 questions. First is the primer. Was it an enamel or an acrylic? Second question is the order in which you applied the AI solution, and acrylic browns tans. Did you do a couple of washes of AI first, than the browns tans, than a few more washes? However you did it, you should be proud of the results.

Thanks Andy. I though drybrushing would do it. After reading that you masked each board I looked closely at each car and it shows. Excellent technique.
andykins Posted - 03/18/2012 : 5:03:36 PM
thank you, and oh sorry Bryan, i though i did cover that, maybe not.

dry brushing. masking a single board at a time and using a small amount of paint it was dry brushed. some boards got a stippling too. strangly enough, i used the very same paint for all 4 cars, including the newer one. yet the range of shades was quite vast. hope that helps, i look forward to seeing your cars

Great job. You made me order a couple of these for myself to give it a try.

I didn't see where you posted your technique for applying the red. It has a natural fade from paint to bare wood and I was curious how you did this.

thank you very much Frederic :)

thank you dave. i normaly hate trying to make plastic/resin look like wood, now i have the confidence to do it more often
littledave Posted - 03/17/2012 : 11:47:55 AM
Coming in here at finish, the end result is nothing short of amazing to me.I can make wood look old and weathered, but to make another material look like old weather wood,,,a work of art.
