Just found this. With a bit of work with a photo edit program you can produce a lot of personalized signs

A scan of the back cover of a book I found whilst clearing out the attic. It's called "The American Billboard 100 years" published 1991, by James Fraser ISBN 0-8109-2765-9
I've tried scanning a couple in but they unfortunately distort as the book will not lie flat. Should have some more time over the weekend and will try to improve the quality.

I notice some of you still insist on using Window's paint program - a no-brainer if ever there was one!
http://www.getpaint.net/index.html will get you a free program that knocks the pants off Paint and a few others as well and best of all IT'S FREE!

I don't recommend re-sizing in a paint program. Instead, open your word processor (I use MS Word). Create a page and insert the photo. From here, you should be able to re-size using the scale on the page to get the printable size.

Remember, if you create the sign using an inkjet printer, you will probably not be able to use the Sellios technique for installing it. The water-based glue will dissolve the ink and ruin the sign. If this is the case, sand the edges and use a spray adhesive instead. It won't get you the real painted-on look, but it will be better than not trying at all.

I would love to be able to buy billboard-size signs in decal form - I have had little success with the Sellios technique for applying a paper sign to make it look painted-on, but have had really good success with decals. They are especially effective on a faux-brick surface, where you can use Solvaset to get them to snuggle down into the mortar lines. A light misting of Dull Cote is all you need to finish the job! Found this as a source for modern signs. Still no time to post the billboards

Frank:

Unfortunately there are not many billboard signs made in decal form. Most are paper. I guess you could scan them in and print them on decal paper. Have you thought of that?

Some of the decals here can be made into billboards.

Dick (and all), Art also offers some building decals. Unfortunately, he doesn't (or didn't) have a web site, so you have to obtain his printed catalog. The building decals are superb, though - I've used several. They replicate the faded, sign upon a sign that you see on the sides of old brick buildings.

That's how I got introduced to his work - he posted pix of a scene from his layout and I loved an old sign on a building, so I emailed him. Very accomodating.

Signs don't always have to be flat. This is a stand-alone diorama,
but the concept could be worked into a layout:

A sign like this could sit at the entrance to a
facility that extends off-layout. The entrance road could
wind through some trees and stop at the backdrop, but imply
there was a lot happening in the distance. It would also
provide a good chance to model a traffic jam.

This diorama was build from an old newspaper article on the
long-defunct Vineland Speedway:

............just a thought.

I assume the race track sign is in a larger scale, in part due to the Henry J on top. 1/25th or so?

Very nice and a neat idea!

That's cool Ken. Is that Vineland NJ? If so where was the track?
