You know what I use Mario! Foam rocks and high density foam for the base on aluminium framing.

What is it with this common Oz theme of guys liking shiny aluminium framing and a nice frock???
As above Mario, but my modules are getting heavy with detail castings!!!

Mario, this is an interesting technique. You've been able to create some very dramatic and realistic rock formations with the foam. You should consider writing an article about the method and send it to RMC or one of the other magazines (perhaps the Gazette).

I am putting together a mini Gn15 layout and as a result of seeing the site about foam rocks I thought that I would give it a go here is the first cut so to speak. the layout is 1/24th scale and is an inglenook switching layout 40 inches long by 9 inches wide.

Looking good Michael! Please start a thread in this forum so you can keep us up to date with your progress. This is just the sort of thing this forum was started for and I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in your layout.

Michael....thankyou for having a go to make some "FRocks"...

Could I suggest you that make separate, various size "FRocks" away from the layout, using the technique as per updated "FRocks" clinic on my web site.
http://members.westnet.com.au/mjbd/html/foam_rocks_-_frocks.html

Trust me mate.....if you make separate finished "FRocks" and fix to the layout with liquid nails., you will end up with 3D rock formation. Finished "FRocks" can be moved around your layout before fixing.

Happy to help anytime on this forum or offline....

Regarding writing a future article about "FRocks"...... These days I like to write for today....... and add to my web site....

Mario

PS.... "FRocks" clinic scheduled for Dearborn, September 2005.....

Hi Guys...

I am preparing "FRocks" clinic notes for the Dearborn convention. Just wondering if I need to add more description or explain in more detail, the process of making the rocks.

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Michael..... did I reply to your request offline ????

If not, do you still need info...... if so... I can quickly make a "Frocks" Indiana Jones [:-cowboy] mine... and post a few pics.

Basically.... get a BLOCK of foam rubber, pull out foam pieces to shape the mine tunnel...cover with topping coat.... add REAL dirt, fine rock dust and when complete place on your layout. It will probably cost ya about 20 cents to make the whole thing... that's cheap modeling.

Mario, some of the very best clinics I've attended have been the ones that were "hands-on" for the attendees. Everyone in attendance was given a small sample of the materials and got to work along, step-by-step, with the presenter and create their own tree or rock or whatever. I think your FRocks clinic would be perfect for that sort of presentation.... if you can manage to have that much material on hand for everyone. Just a thought..... [:-bulb]

Dave, that mine in the photo looks just like the limestone caves that are all around the Kansas City area. Except they are so large that entire businesses and warehouses occupy the caves after the limestone has been removed. But the method of boring and leaving pillars looks just the same as in the photos.

Mike.... decided to tackle the Dearborn clinic as you suggested. [:-thumbu]... I tried "hands on" at local expo's and it's works a treat...however....

I have only 50 minutes talking time, [:-taped]which, for some will be enough.......but, by inviting some of the ladies in the audience to help me, I am sure the presentation will be a little different.

I am posting ( [:-slug] snail mail ) a large cardboard full of "FRocks" samples and materials in the next few weeks, to Detroit...... there's no weight as such, in the rocks, so postage should be cheap....

thanks for the feedback
