A few years ago, I saw a formula to inform us of how many cars we have on a layout and how many we should have.
I have contacted NMRA to get some input from them, and they would like to see the formula themselves.
Here is a list of the headings that was in this formula:
Total Car Capacity
% of Total Capacity
Capacity by Type
Suggested # of Cars (70%)
Actual # of Cars on Hand
Cars Needed
