I ordered a Bachmann Spectrum Shay and got it today! Big disappointment, the loco runs a couple of inches and then she stops and there is a sort of wheelspin! I shot a short video where you can see what happens

I would be happy if someone could help me to fix this problem!

here is the video:

thank you very much,
cheers, Paul

Paul,
Sad to say, but it looks like you got one of the hundreds of these Shays with bad gears.
This has been a known problem for years with Bachmann. The gears split and then spin on the shaft. If you perform a closer inspection you will see the problem.
Bachmann does have replacement gears available. Some modelers have been able to put a collar on the split gear to close the split and use some glue to keep it tight.

Hi Paul Looking at your video it looks like the wheels start then stop. This happened to my HO shays. I know the tracks look clean but reclean them again I took my trucks apart twice to get them running. I sent two back and what ever they did solved it. Good luck Tom

Contact Bachmann Paul, most of the time they send you new gears...they still suck but at least they are new...otherwise there are the NSWL gears as I remember correctly. Expensive but all metal. Guess the Geezer needs to jump in he knows more..

Looked at the video, definitely NOT the track....
The gear(s) is/are split, more likely on the lead truck.
As mentioned, close inspection with a mag lens should
ID the culprit. Good luck.....There are some real good tips
in that thread from other modelers besides me.....

Hi Geezer and hi all,

well this morning I made some microscopic shots and I saw that all four gears are broken;-(( Now I would like to build in the NWSL metal gears you suggested, but I did not find them! Can you tell me where you bought them and maybe the type if possible? That would be veeeery nice of you! Thank you very much for your help! Itīs a big insolence from Bachmann to deliver such uncontrolled stuff!!

cheers, Paul

here they are:

Man, those are the clearest photos I have seen of the cracked gears. I have heard people talk about differential expansion of the gear and axles but that just looks like the holes in the centre of the gears are too small, plain and simple. Why did it take so long for Bachmann to come up with a solution and why did it take NWSL to make a really good set of gears when it appears such a basic manufacturing problem?

Built a waterfront HO layout in Ireland http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22161 but now making a start in On30 in Australia

Hi Neil,
thanks for the nice comment about the "clearest photos" ;-) I shot them with my Nikon Micro Lens in addition with the macro lens rings! That is really a shame what they did with those gears!!

cheers, Paul
