For those who haven't seen the new Tangent announcement elsewhere, overnight I got an email that they're doing the P-S 4750cf covered hopper, http://tangentscalemodels.com/ps4750replicas.aspx . Looks like a stunning model, as you'd expect from Tangent, and it's due to arrive in less than two weeks (Aug. 15), retailing at $42.95 (or 6/$230, 12/$430, or 24/$820).
This is the same prototype that the IM 4750 was based on, though I'm told the IM car has a few discrepancies, most notably (of those I remember), a discharge gate style that's apparently pretty specific to Soo Line cars, and a problem with the rib profile. I've heard other minor complaints about the IM cars, but personally, I've always been happy with them. I clip the bottom gate rails shorter to more closely resemble my prototypes, and I add cut bars, but with those changes, I feel they fit in fine with my other Tangent and Exactrail hoppers.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying the new Tangents. I certainly hope to do so when they offer some paint schemes I can patch for IAIS cars, but I don't see that the differences between the and the IM model merit a wholesale replacement of my IMs. Now, if Tangent offers these cars in KCS paint someday, and I'm betting they will, I'll likely jump on several in order to save myself from adding Plano running boards to my KCS-painted IMs - the last cars in my fleet with plastic roofwalks.
My hope is that this car will lead to another 4750 variant from Tangent, the RTC-style cars like IAIS 7671 ( http://www.iaisrailfans.org/gallery/IAIS-7671/iais_7671_iowacity_ia_7_aug_2004_000_3072x2048 ) with round roof and drop-style end sills. Those would be the perfect complement to Tangent's current line of P-S 4740s and 4750s.

Joe, look over the Tangent next to an IMRC before deciding. main IMRC flaw is the side ribs are all the same width, every other rib should be narrower. also the IMRC is based on the Hundman drawings from 81/82,and have never been corrected. several different Roof Walk set-ups were used also. not all cars had the roof lip over hang,,,etc. maybe Tangent will also do the Body Mounted Brake system that IMRC didnt do ? the RTC,Berwick and Ingalls cars may be possible from a set of Tooling, but maybe not from P-S Tooling ? but who will do the GATC Dri-Flows of 4500/4600/4700 CUFT ? this could get Intresting, more cars with Black Outlet Bays !! Understood, but my budget and hobby time will do much of the deciding for me. With the size of my covered hopper fleet - the bulk of which is made up of IM 4750s - I just couldn't afford to start over from a financial or time perspective.

That's where those Plano kits really came to the rescue. The KCS cars I mentioned have a completely different style than my IAIS cars.

Right, understood. From a distance, the RTC-style and P-S cars look similar, but I'd assume that there are small differences there that'd prevent Tangent from reusing much, if anything.

| NO, Intermountain makes the same one. I am NOT petty and do not care about the little subtle differences that NO cool model railroader would EVER notice. I only notice the prices of each. I would definitely buy an Intermountain over an Athearn covered hopper but Tangent models are of the same level of detail as Intermountain. Intermountains can be found for $25 all day long but we all KNOW that the nice Tangent models will not be found for even a penny less than $42.95. It is a 3/1 Intermountain ratio compared to Tangent's models. Intermountain wins. as I said before it is petty differences that 99% of even the experienced model railroaders will not notice nor care about. Those models where built for the 1% of the Hobbyist. Now if it were a brand new model or an engine well they would have been more successful in sales. |

Hi Al, I mentioned the Intermountain 4750 in my original post. When Russell asked if this was a new model, I was assuming he meant "new from Tangent" vs. "never been offered before". My apologies if I assumed incorrectly.

| Al, wait for Tangent to blow them out if they dont sell. My pusher sold me an N&W 4740 for $24 and he still made a few bucks off of it. He discounts the others to around $37. |

also needed are Greenvilles from the 60s and 70s. Berwicks,Ingalls and RTCs would only fit the eras after 1978. while cars built after 61 would still be on the rails until at least 2000,maybe longer if rebuilt. so while a Better P-S 4750 is needed,it sure isnt the ONLY Covered Hopper Needed. One of the problems with the IM car is the ribs are off, which often affects the lettering on the car. The Soo guys have it made with the IM car, but the more common variants aren't made well (body-mount brakes instead of truck mount, for one), until now.
I was hoping for a Atlas Trainman version, at a price point I could afford... Plano aftermarket walkways from those who like that. |
