So far I'm batting zero trying to post and edit messages on this forum.
I'm was trying to attach a drawing to my original post but it was not accepted. I had saved it as a large (700K ) PDF file. So I reformatted it as a 230K .JPG file and tried reattaching, no joy - here's the error message I got for my troubles:
Request object error 'ASP 0104 : 80004005'
Operation not Allowed
/forum/outputFile.asp, line 13
Also, when I try to edit a previous post the original message gets wiped out, even though I am the original poster.
Guys ....... a little help here, please.

Open up an account with photobucket.com, download your photos to your account, click on the photo you want to post, move the cursor down to the window beside, "IMG code," and left click which copies your photo. Paste this in your post. That's what I did below.

| Hang in there Walt. While the forum can be a little difficult to learn to use, it will be well worth it once you get the hang of it! Everyone here is great and more than willing to help. I'm sure one of the moderators will jump in and walk you through any issues you might have. |

Nah, not me. I've spent a ton of time trying to get members to try and learn how to post pictures directly to the forum only to have them not try at all or link to photobucket or some other photo hosting site.

Rather than trying to edit my own message (that didn't work out very well before) I'll just reply to my own message and try attaching a picture per the tutorial.

Good ........ now we're getting somewhere. I'll tackle editing my own posts another time.
Looks like I made the drawing a little too small (73K) but it still looks O.K. - I think.
My original message went something like this:
I've decided to make my layout on a 3' "shelf around 3 sides of my basement. Somewhere near the the center I want to have a harbor scene. My current design is a little too long, 12'-10", I'd like it to be around 9' long. I'd welcome any comments or suggestions as to how to accomplish that without sacrificing the operational capabilities of the current plan too badly.
The mainline will be automated with trains running in both directions alternately so the mainline can't be used for switching. Also cars will be picked up and dropped off from both directions. Trains will be about 5 cars long and will be dropping off and/or picking up 2 to 3 cars at a time.
I'm really looking forward to hearing from some of you folks.
Thanks, Walt

I should have mentioned that I model in On30 using steam locos - 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 on the mainline and mostly Porters (with tenders) for switching.

| Hi Walt and welcome to the forum! Your harbor area looks like it will have good operational and scenic potential. |

It's probably just me but I would rather see the photo in the post, especially when someone has multiple photos to show. In a case like that, links get really boring.

Walt, congratulations on getting your picture posted and thanks for trying it.
Ray, if Walt reads a little further along on the picture posting tutorial he'll see the instructions on getting the picture to show without clicking a link. I know you're just trying to make an excuse for continuing to link to photobucket but there really isn't a good excuse for not posting directly to the forum.
Walt, sorry for hijacking your thread like this. Layout design isn't one of my strong suits so I can't help with your question, but we have many here who are experts at it. Come on guys, give Walt some input on his plan. |

Sorry, I was just trying to help. I don't have any vested interest in photobucket.

Ray, if you really want to help, you can start by posting pictures directly to the forum and not encouraging members to link to off site hosts. That would be much appreciated. [:-thumbu] Thank you. |

The obvious answer is to whack 3 ft out of the middle. You are going to have to lose something, so pick what is the least critical and drop it. 1. Lose the right most dock. 2. Lose the warehouse. 3. Lose the center dock. 4. Lose the inside runaround and the 2nd track on the center doc, move all that to the right and put the center dock next to the right dock. 5. Put the warehouse tracks where the switcher barn is and the switcher barn where the rear warehouse track is.
