This photo is not on the PN or the NRSL but on John Youngs O scale B & M Cheshire branch layout

I've been working on weathering and re-weathering covered hoppers. This one, a Tangent PS4740 N&W covered hopper, was already sitting in my case weathered from a while back. I decided to get it out and closely match the prototype photo from the Tangent website. Dave gave me permission to use his photo. Again, there are rust spots and so on already applied from my previous weathering. I decided to leave the rust spots and other previous weathering in place and simply apply my new weather over them. I was not trying to copy the prototype hopper perfectly but did want to get a close resemblance.

Here is another Tangent PS4740 I finished a couple of days ago. I try to weather according to what was seen during my era (mid 80's). Tom Johnson

Nothing new this week, so here is a picture I took at the club layout a while back.

Had less than an hour to work on the layout this weekend but was able to get started on the Meredith Drive grade crossing. Meredith plays a big role operationally on the Grimes Line since it's the only crossing with full gate protection since trains will shove across to work Beisser Lumber.

Right now it's just a white slab, but it's a start.

That is one NICE looking engine. The colors are crisp and the lines clean. I also like the flat spray on the loco. Not too shiny.

Thanks. I was happy with the results. I usually weather my stuff, but if I don't, it at least gets a matte finish. Glossy models don't look right to me.

Great work here gents. Thanks for sharing all the pics.

I finished a different kind of modeling project today - modeling a portion of my prototype's computer system and reporting in order to speed operating session setup. Since I model the modern era, car cards aren't appropriate for car routing, so I've always used prototype-format train lists (to show crews what cars to set out), yard reports (to show what cars to pull), and interchange reports (indicating what cars are inbound from the BNSF, CBGR, and UP). In the past, I always generated all these manually, but this system will automate about 3/4 of the work - the yard reports.

Here's the screen used to update my new database, which includes one entry for every car on my model roster. Cars that are on the visible portion of the layout have the Track field populated, which causes them to be included in the appropriate Yard Report for that track. I'll initially update this database with current car locations prior to my next op session, but from that point forward, my dispatcher/clerk will be updating it throughout each session as crews tie up and report pull and spot times. If that works as planned, op session setup time should be greatly reduced, as I'll just have to validate car locations and print the new Yard Reports.

And here's a sample Yard Report:

If anyone's interested in more details, I explained this system further at http://www.iaisrailfans.org/gallery/Operations (sorry about the bad link I posted earlier).

Thanks Bob. It's been fun. Nice to have a task that not only makes op session setup easier and faster, but also makes my dispatcher/clerk's job more realistic, and hopefully more fun.
