I just picked up this HO scale Broadway Limited F-7 with the DGLE single stripe color scheme, and would like a picture, or helpful information, as to what color scheme passenger cars were used with this locomotive. And was this locomotive also used for freight use?

Louis,
I had some exposure to PRR models when I lived in Pittsburgh. I think it is freight. I thought the passenger engines had more gold stripes. But hey I am no expert unless it is Canadian power and I stopped rivet counting years ago[:-banghead]

With the exception of the FP-7's, all PRR F units were specified and purchased for freight use only....the model shown above does not have a steam generator.

See! You just had to be patient and wait for everyone to get home from work.

But not the answer you wanted to hear, I bet.

Thank you Rick! After you talked about the FP-7's, I was able to do some google searches and found that they made them longer, and used them in Passenger service. That the first thought F-7's did not work out for passenger service for the PPR, and they used them for freight use instead.
So that is better for me now, because I didn't want to buy passenger cars if I didn't have to. I would rather use this locomotive for freight. So you answered, and cleared that one up.
Here are two proto photo's from 1952 and 1955 I came across (F-7's in freight use) right up my alley. Thanks

Hey Louis, just to add to Rick's comments, the main spotting feature of the F units is the steam generator equipment, or lack thereof. If you look at your models, you will see a plate on the roof near the back of each unit. On the models, this just appears to be a blank plate bolted to the roof. On an FP-7, that plate would contain hardware associated with the steam generating equipment needed for passenger operation. That hardware would include air intakes and exhaust ports, items obviously missing off your model.

In addition, the early passenger unit were painted Tuscan Red and typically had the 5 stripes, which was their passenger paint scheme, although in later years, many of the passenger units were regeared to freight service, so it wasn't uncommon to see Tuscan Red units pulling freight.

The unit you purchased is a great model and accurate for PRR freight operations.

Hope this helps!

Mark

Great research thread Lou. Having grown up during this time frame I do vaguely remember those F units. And I learned something about how to differentiate between freight and passenger locos.

Wish we could go trackside and see a few of these beauties now!! Modern day railroading just doesn't do much for me. Now when I'm just getting over the motive power on a train that blocks me at a crossing and I have to sit and sit and wait for it to go by, all I see at the end of the train is a stupid looking EOT device in place of a caboose!! What has happened to railroading!![:-boggled][:-eyebrows]

Best, Andy Keeney

Look out for #1, but don't step in #2!
