My other projects have creatively stalled for one reason or another and it has been awhile since I've built an actual laser kit. This has been in my stack of shelf orphans for awhile.
This is a great little structure and is of the usual Bar Mills high quality we've come to expect. The basic design easily lends itself to some creative "imagineering" and IMO it strikes me as in the same genre as Earl Smallshaw's classic "Perkins Produce" (December, 1974, Model Railroader) - proportions, roof pitch, etc.
To begin, here are the original OEM photos of the structure ...

Dave D. had previously built this structure: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17621

This is in 1/87.
My construction methodology may seem a bit unorthodox as I've started with the side elevation to work out my color scheme:
Walls: Americana Celery Green, Wasabi Green, A/I sparingly on individual clapboards;
Doors/Windows: Americana Russet;
Roof: Folk Art Olive Green
... and appraise the appearance and texture of the diamond-shaped shingled roofing.
Thus far I've proceeded per kit instructions except the shingles were cut using craft-type pinking shears and heavy bond paper and the rain gutter and downspout were scratched from brass and styrene tubing. I've also added a transom above the door and another portal window (Tichy).
Lighting is a pre-soldered warm white 3V DC chip LED purchased from Evan Designs: (http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/smd-chip-leds.html) wired in a Campbell's brass lamp shade.

Here are the LEDs ...

If there is enough interest, I'm happy to explain and illustrate step-by-step construction techniques, otherwise, I'll continue to post progressive photos.
Thanks and Best wishes, ...

Thanks, Cameron.
I really like a lot of Bar Mills' structures, too. Some inspire me more than others - as this one did.
If you're interested in structure lighting, take a moment and check out the Evan Designs LEDs as they are pre-soldered and guaranteed for two years. Their prices are very reasonable considering: http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/ledlights1.html

Fast forward ...
The roof dormers and other details are not part of the OEM kit.
Since my structure will be in heavy conifer forest, the small walkway will give access to fire barrels from Wiseman Model Services ...
Additional door and windows are Tichy ... http://www.tichytraingroup.com/
The small window dormer still lacks roof flashing, and the larger still needs joist ends, gutters and down spout, misc. roof details.
Yes, the lamp above the door is another chip LED. Lighted photos to follow.

The back elevation wall is cut from a 12X6-inch sheet of random clapboarding - a perfect match with the OEM siding supplied in the kit ...
*This looks upside down but I flipped it over and it looks the same to me* [:-magnify]

Very cool Delbert!
Another masterfully altered kit resulting in a truly 'one of a kind' structure. Looking forward to watching this one progress.
Cheers, Mark. |

I've taken the liberty to post your image above.
Your Stanley's looks great. I see you reversed the side elevations and enlarged the overall structure profile. I plan to do similar.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, Dick.
I really like a lot of Bar Mills' kits, too. I still have a few others in my stack, here, but who knows when I will get to them.
The next section of my build (the extension that I illustrated the back wall of, above) will have three or four chip LEDs installed. I'll do a step-by-step on the lighting then. In the meantime, may I suggest you check out these links and videos from Evan Designs ...

I posted some photos and information here - about half way down the page: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36437&whichpage=2
Thanks for your kind comments and interest in my project.
Best wishes, Delbert

This, originally, was the side elevation wall but I have turned it 90-degrees making it the front of the extension I've posted above.
Window, door and covered stairwell placement ...

Here is the same OEM wall ...
