Back looking at On30 after dabbling in N scale for awhile. Here is my new idea.

Small terminal for a mining/quarry company. Many types of rock are brought down from the quarry and processed here or shipped on via barges. Power will be a Davenport with a Shay making an appearance only to bring in transfer cars and take out assembled trains for transfer. This will all be off scene. There will be a tail track on the lower right side at least 4 feet long, removable and non-sceniced as a fiddle yard.

I found in N scale that switching is of interest to me. I also found that I can make N scale run smoothly so On30 should be easier. The numbers are spots for cars. The squares are 6" each and, using 20' cars, the cars are 5".

Spots 1 and 2 are the monument company, you know tombstones and other large flat items. Inbounds are flat cars of raw stone, outbounds are box cars of finished monuments.

Spots 3, 4, 5 and 6 are for barge loading. Side dump ore type cars will bring gravel down from the quarry, two different grades so two different barges. I will also add a crane with a bucket to bring in coal if I have room.

Spots 7 and 8 are also for gravel and sand, smaller sizes than the barge traffic and in small, 10' or shorter 4 wheel ore cars. Maybe v-tips if I can scratch them. Basically just grates in the ground with a few out buildings. Everything else is off scene. Very tight radius here so the Davenport is required as is the use of 4 wheel cars.

The yard is for over flow cars and for making up trains for the Shay to remove later.

Future expansion will be to the right with a small stream, and servicing for the Davenports and fuel/water for the Shay.

Looks like my image truncated a bit on the right. Out there the runaround completes and there is 12" beyond the points there so room for the Dav and one car even without the fiddle extension.

The scale is O(1:48) the gauge is 30". Therefore, unless you have 30" track on the barges they are not 0n30 barges. They are O scale barges and will work in O, On30, On3, On42, On2, On15 or any other 1:48 scale gauge.

Just noticed how much of the picture I cut off. The right 18" of the plan are missing so my yard is that much longer. I want enough room to store inbound cars and still be able to switch everything. I can also store a few more cars there if I want to make the switching more challenging.

I like the track plan and the thought that you have put into it.

I believe that you posted on a Yahoo Group and said the grid is 6 inches. If this is correct, the layout is 2 feet deep. With 6 inches gone at the front of the layout, you will have a lot of track in close proximity and in O-scale, your buildings will have to be pretty small and your track pretty close together. On30 is smaller that standard gauge, but buildings are still pretty big.

I'm looking forward to the build.
