Hi guys.
Well I'm going to extend my layout to include a shortline mountain section based on South Westland in the South Island of New Zealand. It is fictional, and is in HO scale. I'm looking at different rolling stock and wondering what peoples oponions are, and what else is worth looking at. Here's what I have found so far:
Serria West - HO worktrain. (Brett had a very short reissue of this kit recently and I bought one - hasn't arrived yet)
Rio Grande - (love the look of that little caboose!)
Cache Creek Scale Models - these guys seem to have quite a bit that looks good.
International Hobbies - their lch coal hopper 10 packs look good.
I'm hoping to keep the maximum length to under 30'.
My layout will be moving lime, coal, timber and some general freight as well as passengers.
My loco register so far consists of:
two 50T B-class Bachmann climaxes (yet to be regeared - although I have the NWSL gears - I'm just not confident to do it myself)
two Bachmann British 0-4-0 'Pugs' (the wrong scale, I know - but they are so cute and small I don't think they will look out of place)
One Rivarossi 0-4-0 camelback.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I have spent time thinking about your proposed project and existing modules. [:-idea]
But no ideas to suit your specific wish list.
Maybe when the worktrain arrives, it will give you a direction. Happen's often.

Thanks Mario and Neil.
My layout is fictional - so HO scale, not HOn3 1/2. It is set in the early 1930's.
I'll have a look at those sites Neil.
Does anyone own any of the kits I mentioned above? Are thay good quality? Do they run well? etc.

| check out B.T.S. they have several boxcars/flatcars at 30 ft and less lenght. they're well designed, fun to build kits. |

Bob - that better than scratch stuff looks good and quite reasonably priced. Thanks for that link. It also has a lot of information about lengths, dates introduced etc which is very helpful.
Mario - my wife is in Melbourne today, flies back home tonight. If only I had have been more organised! To be truthful I just spent my modelling money on Smokey Hollow Products 'Jon Olson Chemical Co. - the home of Skeeters fly dope. I thought this would fit in nicely with South Westlands infamous sandflies! (And I've always loved this design - especially the tank farm) My modelling buddy is also off to the narrow gauge convention in Seattle in september, so I need to save some pennies for that too - he's happy to bring me something back. We'll touch base again soon, so can chat about it then.

My only experience has been with Cache Creek Scale Models. I bought a small water tank car to test out the product. They look good from afar, but when examined closely, I found them a little on the cheap side. The NBT is over size
The single truck units are just a frame screwed down to a Kadee Truck. Light in weight, it has derailed easily when being pushed with some weightier cars in front of it. I guess for the cost, they are reasonable. There is obviously a lot of work involved in building one of theses
I however would not buy another. I could make a better model from scratch.

Thanks Mike - really good to know.
I'm looking at getting my friend, who is making the big journey from Christchurch NZ to Seattle for the convention, to grab me a few things. At this stage I was looking at 2 or 3 Rio Grande Models kits and maybe a 10 pack of NSWR LCH class coal hopper wagons by International Hobbies.

Has anyone got any of these? They look exactly like what I am after, very similar to what was used in NZ only standard gauge.
Both Rio Grande Models and International Hobbies have stands at the Seattle convention.
