Hello Y'all,

Today I kinda switched gears giving all my S.A. & A.P. flat cars a rest, awaiting parts to complete the hoist and winch. That being said, time to start the Fredericksburg Junction Depot. I decided, since there are no known pictures of the small depot building just west of Comfort, TX, that I would use American Model Builders Kit 120 Lake Junction to represent it. Fredericksburg Jct was not a big whistle stop since Comfort and Waring on either side were.

I constructed the base a few weeks ago and its just been sitting but today it got a nice coating of DebenLLC's Nautical Teak. Once dried, I began to construct the interior with the sides guiding me.

The two benches are from Rusty Stumps. They're great. Easy to build. Made of plywood, they paint easy and glue fast and easy.

I wanted to put a stove in the depot, so I used Selley's Pot Belly Stove from Bowser. The stove kit comes with the coal basin and shovel. I added some fine coal cinders from Woodland Scenics.

The brickwork is courtesy of Jimmy at Monster Model Works. He already produces great brickwork out of basswood. I approached him about making the mantel bases for the stove. He was too happy to help. I got various sizes and shapes for different depot angles.

The brickwork was dry-brushed with DecoArts Americana Acrylics purchased at Hobby Lobby. Working quickly, going from dark to light, I used Charcoal Black, Slate Gray, Umber, Canyon Orange, Burnt Sienna, and finally Crimson. The affect is a well worn, but nice brick. Perfect for interiors.

Next to the bench and by the brickwork is a cuspidor for patrons to spit tabaccy in or throw simple trash in. The cuspidor is compliments of Scale Structures Ltd.

Already in place is another Scale Structures Ltd., item, is a large steam crate. I have a few more luggage pieces to place.

Coming is a small fire barrel, small table with a row of books, depot masters desk with papers and telegraph. A period phone will be on the wall behind the desk.

I need to locate a train board and make a small bulletin board. The ceiling will have a Scale Structures Ltd., Ceiling fan from the rafters, and I will put some oil lamps in the room as well. I'd like to illuminate them with Fiber Optics.

More to come shortly.

Manny

Very nice, Manny. You going to "weather" the spittoon?

Thanks guys,

Weather the spittoon? Hmmm...trying to think how to do that.

Up next is Dave at Vector Cut's Station Master's Desk. Stay tuned for details.

... reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Looking forward to watching your creative progress on this.

Hey Y'all,

Last night and today I finished the station masters' desk. The desk is from Dave at VectorCut. Here is a link to his website: Vectorcut. This desk was a perfect fit for the time era and the depot.

The kit is made of HD cardstock, and is laser cut. Absolutely no problems in trimming the parts from the card. Each one fit as it should. This kit has many very small parts and although I did it without any magnification, I wouldn't recommended it unless you are used to working with very little things.

The desk goes together very nicely. No gaps when completed, and a little sanding with 320 Grit does nicely. The cardstock takes stain very well. The desk was stained using DebenLLC's Knotty Walnut, then dry brush highlights with Polly S Rust and then a little Instant Age for wear. I painted the draw handles Tamiya Copper, then toned down with Instant Age to give a slight patina. I really like how the desk came out.

The chair is painted to match the desk, with Polly S Rust for the cushions and backrest. Instant Age on the two gives it that old chair look you saw when you were a kid sitting at your grandparents, or quite often what you see when you are in an antique store.

The desk was positioned directly below the end window. A Scale Structures Ltd., typewriter, telegraph, and other pieces will be on and around the desk. I have an old TOC wall mount telephone going in as well.

Here are pics of the desk during and after construction, added to the floor plan. Not too much more to put on the floor. Just a few do-dads.

Enjoy!

Well, I snagged the right color "green" for the interior of the depot. I don't think the pictures get it just right, but it's a dead match for typical depot insides.

Never through away parts left over from kits. You never know what you might be able to use. Case in point: LaBelle gives you more than enough of the flat car decking, which is tongue and groove. Perfect for chair rail guard sheathing inside a depot. So, that's what I did. I painted it white to accent the green.

Here are the pics.

Painting and working on some small interior details. The first finished, however, is an external detail. I have to say it is the smallest work I've done to date. I really need to get myself a magnifying headset because my eyes are buggy right now. May I present to you, Fredericksburg Jct's Train Order Signal:

The T.O.S. is from Scale Structures Limited. I drilled the lantern out to accept jewels from Utah Pacific. Talk about tedious!!! I painted the mast with Polly S Tarnished Black. Then I dry brushed it with Flat Aluminum. Then after that was dry, I weathered it with DebenLLC's Weathered Rust. The flags got an extremely light touch of DebenLLC's Instant Age. I know that the lantern is on top and the flags go below. I was just trying to get the best shot with a broken camera that doesn't like to focus.

More later tonight...

Manny

The station master's desk and work area are coming alive. I've added the telegraph set to the desk and installed the telephone. I have to form some Phosphorus Bronze wire to form the telephone wire and the telegraph wire up the walls yet. I'm trying to decide if I should leave them the bronze color (natural) or paint them black. Opinions?

Here are the pics. Still coming is the typewriter and some other desk do-dad's. I also need to make a train board for inside the station.

A few more pieces of luggage and personal items for inside the depot. Soon I can start on the outside. I still need to do the interior ceiling beams and add the ceiling fan.

Construction has begun on a train board for inside the station. I cut a piece of styrene for the board and will air brush it tarnished black. I have ordered .006 white stripes from Clover House. The board will be too small to do any letters, but the lines will look right. I will frame it with wood, and stain the wood in a Walnut or Mahogany to dress it off. This project will take about a week to complete since I have to wait for the dry transfers to arrive. I will get everything else ready though.

On the outside, I will build a larger train board and will attempt to do it with lettering. I also have 12" individual letters like I had with the Heinz signs in standard Railroad Roman Block lettering. I have to make up "FREDERICKSBURG JCT" signs.

Fun, fun!

Thank you Dallas. I appreciate the positive reinforcement. I'm curious how much easier the magnifier will be to do detail work. I have to do some research to see what headpiece will be the best one for my needs.

As for progress on the depot, here's a mock up of two sides of the depot temporarily attached to the foundation by spring clips. Here you can get an idea of how the interior is going to look. I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping that I've captured a small town, country, turn of the century depot.

I added a second chest from Selley, produced by Bowser. I started by painting the chest Polly S Depot Olive. Then I did all the metal corner work in Tamiya Bronze. After that was dry, I dry brushed Polly S Rust and Mud, along with DebenLLC's Instant Age. I then dry brushed over all a little of the Depot Olive and it gave that see through appearance. I placed it opposite of the other chest to create a small walk way appearance.

The desk now has the telegraph machine on it, and the phone is in place. A second spittoon was added to the left of the desk. Above the spittoon on the wall will be a train board.

Historically at Fredericksburg Jct. There were two arrivals and departures; one during the morning hours. One during the afternoon/evening hours. The S.A.F & N., had to wait for the S.A. & A.P. train to return from Kerrville, before it could head back to Fredericksburg. Same as the opposite. Fredericksburg folks had to wait until the S.A. & A.P. went to Kerrville, turned and returned, before they could finish the journey to San Antonio, or wherever they were going. It was an interesting junction, that culminated in a lot of wait time.

Here are the pics of the progress so far. I hope you like it. I'm having fun with it, but trying not to let my anal retentiveness perfection ruin it.

I think this is where I will stop tonight. It's 1:17 AM and Roosevelt my Great Dane gave up on me 45 minutes ago and is now sleeping in my bed.

Good night Y'all. More tomorrow for sure.

Manny

Very nice progress, Manny. The train order signal looks great. You must have younger eyes than me.

A head magnifying glasses is a good idea. It has let me continue build models and other fine work as before even after needing stronger and stronger prescription reading glasses. I have tried several magnifyers but the best so far are Optivisor with the glass lens and adjustable band. Also you can go to the drugstore and get reading glasses in various powers. These are not as strong but also can help. The lamp with the magnifying lens in it I have but dont like. Because you have to hold your face and the model just so for focus.

Manny, I think it's terrific..I'd get the glasses though because you will soon need a harness for the dog and a white cane...
Best,
