No connection to Chivers... Just showing my attempt to build their kit.
I purchased two of the following kits for 15 pounds each. The critter is much larger than a Davenport or Porter. It calls for a Black Beatle 38mm drive with 14mm wheels. Since I do not have any I am going to try to use some other drive.

Ron,
I have been checking drives.
The new Bachmann On30 trolly drive may work but the wheel base is 5 MM too long. I am also looking at a 1970's HO plymouth drive that is 2 mm too short.
Here is more progress. It is still three sub assemblies just resting in place for the picture. It will look better when it is glued together.

I have been messing around and anyone who wants to build a big d-cell (Brudda) could buy two kits and use the two hoods, one cab and a HO SW or GP9 and build a nice big d-cell.

looking forward to this, i have 3 to build, one as stock with a bullant major motor bogie(it was working out about£15 more then a blackbeetle) and im going to join two kits on a bachmann 70tonner, the kits hood fits right over the bachmann one :P
hope you can find a drive, there's plenty of room under those beasts :D |

Just a thing to remember maybe....there is an outfit in Australia called "Hollywood foundry" who make custom wheelbases with motors and drives. They are really worth considering for powering various projects...I have used one to make a rail-truck with. I was really happy with the service.... Andy, Feel free to jump in with a build.
I want your honest thoughts on this. Here is the drive out of a Bachmann ON30 Trolly. Is the wheel base being a little too long a real distraction. Yes I still only have my iphone for pictures.

Larry, if you're down at track level looking at it straight on, it might be a distraction, but I wonder about the normal viewing angle. Will anyone notice if you don't tell them?

Nice little critter Les.
Larry, I think you will really only notice it in pictures. Looking at it in real life from usual viewing angles, it won't be noticed at all.

TBH i think that drive would work fine, eyeleval we can see its off, but by the time the whole thing is painted, weathered and on the track i think it'll work fine

Les, Ron and Andy,
Thanks for following along. I pushed on with the trolly drive. Wiring for DCC was easy I used an inexpensive Digitrax SDH164D decorer with sound.

I wanted to try an excitor speaker. This one was bought some time ago from Dayton electronics. I do not think they sell this size anymore.

I gave the engine some paint but I should have known the paint would not stick well in the Carolina humid air.

I will paint it again on a less humid day. This picture will show you the size of the critter beside a porter. It runs really well.
Lot's more to do. Repaint, detail the inside and out, add windows, add lights add weight and a lead driver and passenger.
For anyone interested this is a very nice kit. It cost me around $23.00 US plus shipping (around $6.00). The drive cost about $20.00 and I got the decoder on sale for $30.00. So a nice critter for not much outlay.
For now I will run it a little more today until the paint sets up. More to follow.
