How about some pictures?
Patience, grasshopper, I still got a long way to finish before any fotos get posted
Like Dallas mentioned, some people like to document their builds and receive constructive criticism so that they can improve on their next build. I take it you are not one of those people.
I look forward to the pictures of the completed structure then. |
Regards Wes. Dont leave for tomorrow what you can do today. |

At last.......save for some important touch ups, the building is finished. the two wall lights on the front and side, I made them look like the bulbs were blown out and like they had seen better days; maybe I could glue some tiny wiring later to look like the lamp wriing is sticking out from the said lamps. Later, I'll add a Miller Engineering fluorescent lamp over the Hotpoint sign to light it up. Then I'll put in a set of LED lights to illuminate the dormier windows and do the same for the rest of the building, add more details, before gluing the building to the base I scratchbuilt. Then do the yellow awning, and add digital sound effects, such as boxing training as well as effects of a club fight taking place. For now, I'll put it in HCS till the time is right to install on my layout for keeps.
Notice the towels hanging on the line twixt the stack and the sign base? They were bloodied towels from Saturday night's fight.
Many thanks to Doug Foscale, Foscale itself, Foscale Ltd., my brother in law, J. R. K., the website where it came from (Brass Trains), Michaels, where I got much of my art supplies, and my mom, H.V. M., for her help with the stucco finish (no easy task) and her patience.
Happy hunting, a440

Nice handi-work on Hollander's. I'm sure you must feel a sense of accomplishment. [:-thumbu] [:-thumbu] [:-thumbu]
I'm a "sign-junkie" and I really like your choice and placement of the signs.
If I may, at some point, you might liberally and lightly weather (with Bragdon's???) some of the areas of your build - to knock off the "new" shine. But, of course, that is entirely up to you and your personal tastes. It's your build and $$$ spent.
Looks to me that your completed structure has been a great success as I see, despite posting photos as requested, there haven't been any, so called, "constructive criticism" posted.
So may I say, well done ... looking forward to your future projects.
Welcome to RR-Line Forums.
Best wishes, ...

A big accomplishment for you - each build will give you additional skills you will use to hone you painting and construction abilities. While there are some areas that one might consider mentioning here, I think it suffices to say you completed a difficult building project and I look forward to seeing your progress on your next project. Congrats

Mr.Mesa (a440),congratulations on completing your first Foscale Kit, "Hollender's Gym". This kit, is one of my all time favorites for it's design & theme. I was kinda disapointed though that you did not post any photo's during your build. Trust me I know it takes a little extra effort to do this, but you will be rewarded for that effort. Now then, let's get down to business about how you can do an even better build next time. This forum can be so much more for you, if you allow it to be. There are so many fantastic modelers here, with so much knowledge willing to help. Had you, just asked for ideas or thoughts, I am positive your Hollender's would look even Better! So next time ask some questions & post some photo's along the way.

Used a combination of orange and brown paint, watered down a notch or 2. |

I felt the bloodied rags were a clever detail.

Hi All:
I sent this guy a PM. He has not replied. I think you guys are being way to generous. This guy needs help in learning how to build. That structure is not very well done and you guys know it. The color matches clash. He needs to look at the color wheel. You are not helping him with all your compliments. You should be honest. I was willing to give him help but he did not reply. Hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! The yellow roof over the right end wall is supposed to have rolled roofing on it. It has none. Just card stock painted yellow with ugly seams.
PS: Profile says he 15 years old. Hmmmm again. Send me a photo.

At age 15 I was not making a better model. Maybe you were Karl, but back then I had no kit only cardboard and paper and kids today 99.9% dont interest in model kit, only ipad. So I think you are the one who need help learning... how to be encouraging. Also I look at your work and think maybe it looks like toy and could be better. But I dont say, because you are happy with it and that is what matters. So why should it be different for our young friend? Respecfully I think you are out of line.

Hi Andy:
When I first started building some 40 years ago my models looked pretty horrible. They were also of paper and cardboard. I got lots of criticism and that's how I improved. I still get it sometimes today from better modelers than I If something doesn't look right. So if you see a place where I need improvement please don't hesitate to tell me. How else am I to learn. At any rate I respect your opinion.

Hi Karl....actually I think he really is 15 years old. I've had some past conversations with him when he was originally trying to purchase the kit. It took him a long time to get the kit because he had to save up his money for quite a while.
Anyway, I do agree with many of your points. One obvious flaw that I saw right away (besides the color selection) was the fact that he didn't file down the windows/doors after he removed them from their sprues. You can still see the "nubs" from where he cut it. J.Mesa....just take some sort of file (...your Mom's nail file will work) and file down those little "nubs" so that their flat with the rest of the window (or door). That's one obvious easy improvement to make on your next build. |
