Here is a little caboose that I'm building using a narrowed BVM caboose body and a flatcar that I built from styrene. I used Tichy HO scale archbars with a narrowed bolster and Micro-Trains HOn3 wheelsets and Kadee couplers. I built the frame with a hollow channel and added A-Line weights. It will need a bit more weight inside the body. The car measures 5 feet wide.

I can't decide if I like the body at the end or the center. I am leaning toward the center with some kind of water tank on one end and some tools and stuff on the other.

I gotta say, this is the most fun that I've had in a while. On20 is VERY attractive.

Thanks for the comments! The caboose does look better with the body mounted in the center. The roof is now on the body and I got started on the tank.

I hope to continue on it in the next day or so and will post more photos then. As always, any feedback is welcome! And, yes, I am planning on building more cars. I have one more set of trucks ready and parts to build more, so I'll need to use them!

Here is the little tank for one end of the caboose. I'll post some pics later of the tank sitting on the car. I'm really undecided as to the position of the body because the tank should probably be over one of the bolsters due to the weight. The tank will be on a small stand with the outlet pipe coming from underneath.

I'm going to need some feedback here if the tank should be used on this or saved for another project!

how big is the tank on the car? its hard to tell where it should be with out knowing :P but i think it would be fine away from the bolster, its a great looking tank and i think it would look great on the car

Andy - I'll post a photo tonight of the tank on the car. I'll position the body in different locations.

To give an idea on size, look at the third picture in the first post. The tank height is around Van White's hand. The tank width is almost right at the outer upright posts of the body, which is somewhere around 4-1/2 feet wide.

In case anyone is wondering where the name Van White came from...my wife named him after Vanna White since I used him for some poses in a couple of articles I had in Light Iron Digest years ago.

Need to figure out the weight of full size tank full of water. May want to put it over/close to body bolster as caboose could wind up being pretty "stern heavy" in real life or sag the platform under the tank.

Just a thought.

Andy - It does look good against the body. I don't know why I didn't take a picture at the same time...

Bill - That is my thinking. I guess I need to figure out how many gallons my little tank holds!

Am I wrong in thinking that, being a 20" gauge railroad, they would want to utilize the cars for more than one purpose, if possible? Or should a caboose be just a caboose?

Shift your cab slightly off center and put the tank right next to the cab and over the bolster.
That still leaves room for tools on the other end and will look somewhat different than all the other kitbashes.

Here are the 3 different views with the tank:

I'm not sure which one I like the best. Without the tank, the body in the center is my favorite. With the tank, I'm not so sure.
