Hi all, been a couple of weeks since I had a few minutes for myself. Life happens.

Today I started an MDC 2-8-0. I began with a file, dressing up the metal bits and bobs. Taking the flash off. Making it paint ready.

So, of course, I broke something. The rod off the crosshead piece.

Now, I am thinking, that one of you fine gents know just where I can get another one, or even an entire brass set for the side rod assembly.

I will have pictures as they become available.

Next question, do I want to get the re-gear upgrade from NWSL?  Looks like the motor will be fine for DCC, as long as I pay attention to the isolation.

Bobby

Bobby,

Is this an old timer 2-8-0, Pennsylvania 2-8-0, or a Harriman 2-8-0? The type will make a difference.

It is an Old Timer in HOn3. It is a sweet looking little kit. Should be able to make something very cool. Of course, just getting it to actually run, would be pretty cool, too.

I was able to find several different crossheads in brass at Wiseman. I stomped around on the web for while, went to Ebay, and even went to the club house to dig through the bone yard. This is going to be a simple fix, I can just feel it. My modeling time is over until Thursday, so there is plenty of time to figure it out.

I still would be interested in a complete set of brass side rods if anybody has a source.

Hey Bobby,
I've built one of these. I lowered the boiler some and converted it to an oil burner. It runs fairly well, albeit a little noisy. I used the original side rods and they work well.

Hi Bobby - I've probably built a half-dozen of these HOn3 locos...both inside and outside frame. The newer issue with the silver wheelsets has a motor that is good for DCC, you'll just need to get the dremel out and make room for a decoder.

On the older runs with the brass wheelsets, I've found the NWSL gears and a new can motor make a world of difference. NWSL used to make a gear AND Sagami motor kit for these; now the gear kit and motor need to be purchased separately. I have only used the stock stuff on the newer release and they seemed fine.

Will epoxy hold the piece together? If it's the part I'm thinking of, it's probably not under much stress.

Thanks Chuck, I thought of epoxy. AC, too. There just is not much surface to bond together.

I found a set that is close on Ebay. I should be able modify it enough to work.

Got any pictures of those completed model?

Hi Bobby,
I was never able to see a close up of the part, but most crossheads are similar. I doubt epoxy would do the job. But, if you want to try that, I would first suggest to drill a tiny hole, about .020" in the crosshead and the rod using a pin vise. If the material is too hard to do with a pin vise, then at least get it started with a pin vise and finish drilling with a Dremel. You don't need to go in too deep, about 1/8" in each piece will suffice. This way, when you use the expoxy, the .020" steel pin will add more strength. The other possibility is to just drill into the crosshead as far as you can and enlarge the hole using progressively larger drill bits until you get a hole large enough to epoxy a piece of brass rod the same size.
Good luck and regards, Vic Bitleris

Thanks, Vic, That is an idea I was tossing around. Still waiting on parts to come by snail mail. Thursday will be my only opportunity to play for the next 10 days.
