Thanks for all the comments folks, these are always much appreciated.

Bryan, you are right! I am probably the only man in the world who doesn't like beer so the beer can thing hadn't occurred to me but now you point it out you are right it does look like a beer can, anyone got any Coors decals they don't want?

And Rick, pictures indeed!! Sorry can't oblige due to copyright and the fact that you will throw me out of the Forum for publishing pornography SO, you will have to do with a mental image.

Lets start with the Super, his wife eventually forgave him providing he got rid of his secretary, which he did, and he still works for the railroad.

Now onto the secretary, her name was Dolly Parden. After getting the push she went prospecting and eventually she established the Dolly Parden mine which was known locally as the "Big Busty". Apparently the story goes that she was a pretty good singer also.

And finally the president, you may remember he was a Dutchman by the name of Hertz van Rental. He did make good his threat and sold his holding in the FW&CL and went to, I think it was Chicago, and did inded start a car rental business under his christian name and I believe he does indeed rent out vans.

Disclaimer. All the foregoing is total rubbish and should there be any relevance to anyone living or dead in the story this is totally intentional but its all in good fun.

Andy. I was a "watcher" during that period and thought that "Joes ex wife" was great fun, I thought it was a shame that it didn't carry on, I'm all for a bit of harmless fun!

The saga of the disconnects continues...

The Superintendent, no doubt because of fond memories of the Red Garter episode with his now departed Secretary has decided to paint the disconnects Red.

Here they are awaiting their wheelsets.

He has also now painted the Water Tank aka Beer Can, which also awaits its wheelsets.

He has decided to turn the remaining disconnects into Hopper Cars and here he proudly presents the prototype. He does appreciate it looks rather silly without its wheelsets and apolagises for this, the sets he has have small HO wheels and these need to be bigger but the only way he can do this, as he can't get the disconnects apart, is to saw through each axle, remove a bit and rejoin the axle with a length of brass tube, but he can't find any tube anywhere that will fit so this will have to wait on a visit to the local modelshop.

Finally, its AT LAST stopped raining for a while and here are three members of my family taking advantage of this.

This is good stuff! I like both cars, but especially the tank...and the red disconnects look great.

Glad you all like the disconnect cars, I'm not sure of the hopper car I think the body is too big and it overpowers the disconnects, anyone got any thoughts on this?

And Verne, there may be more trouble ahead for the Super, we will see if he decides to behave himself after he finishes the disconnects, we will see.

At last managed to get to the model shop for some tubing, I had about every size you could think of except, of course, the size I needed.

As I couldn't get the disconnects apart I have cut the axles, removed a bit and sleeved them. Here they are, they are not finished yet as they have to come off for painting, when painting I will gauge them and just run a tiny bit of Cyano to fix the tube to the axle.

Disconnects look a lot better with wheels on don't you think?

I hope to get the second prototype hopper body done over the weekend, pictures will follow.

John, they both look good to me.
If I had to choose one I'd go with the one in the foreground only because it looks to be a little smaller.

Rick, I think you may be right, maybe though I might try a mark 3 and make a slightly smaller version of mark 1 just to see how it turns out. Its turning out to be an interesting excercise, anyone want to chip with ideas?

There was an article in a magazine (I think Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette) that covered wood hoppers recently (and by recently, I am probably thinking within the last decade or so)...though my memory isn't what it used to be. I can't remember which box those magazines are packed away in though, so I am not much help beyond that. By the 1950s/60s - most would have been switched over to run metal hoppers, but since you are doing a narrow gauge in that period - you have a bit more flexibility on the issue than other prototypical lines would have.

Even making it with those dimensions in mind, but with steel construction would probably be the sweet spot or close to it. Unfortunately, I am not too much help right now regarding what those dimensions might be.

both look nice to me,i like mark 2 more then mark 1, maybe if you do a mark 3, a mix of both, the siding of mark 1, in the size of mark 2, but with the bottom of mark 2 as well :)

I'd go with Mk2 as well, they scale well with the disconnects. No reason why the Mk1 can't have a place on the layout as well - many railroads went over zealous with a bit of equipment that ended p being a tad too big. A Baldwin salesperson managed to get the Manati Sugar Company in Cuba to buy a 2-6-6-2 3ft Gauge Mallet when the previously supplied 2-8-0's had worked just fine. Despite being a cracking looking bit of kit, it lasted about 14 years and was scapped in the mid thirties, and some of the 2-8-0's survived up until the 1980s!

Anyway enough jackanory from me - back to setting up a decent modelling desk in the spare room, need to make the area user friendly if I intend spending a few evenings a week in there.

Cheers,

Stephen
