Tom, et al, I think we need to establish some ground rules before we forget them and move in another direction. So first up...no spitting, chewing, no smoke & mirrors, no hurting of animals during the making of your locos, no high 5s, no end zone dances.
Are we showing finished or series of pics about that build? or builds? What say you loco builders? I have some forneys in line to be chopped,do I do it here or ??

Let's post photos of our modified and or "bashed" On30 locos. Steam and Critters. Please keep photos to a minimum number that show us what you've done. (Of course more detailed builds deserve their own threads so we can follow along as you build them ) Our policy is after three comments on each loco, please don't add a fourth...they guys feel we don't need all the "attaboys". If this needs to be changed we are pretty flexible...after all this is a hobby we "share" with each other.... What we really want to see is your modified/bashed unique On30 motive power[:-eyebrows]!
I'll start us off with the HO scale Model Power DDT switcher that is really built to 1/4" scale. A bunch of us have modified them over the years.....
I cut off the low cab and replaced it with a metal cab from the Bachmann Climax. I added some styrene to cover the scribed wood siding on the orginal cab. The hood needed to be lengthened about 1/4" to reach the front of the new cab.

I made those solid "rounded" pilots seen on a lot of the industrial porters by shaping up some balsa wood and cutting out the coupler pockets. The sand domb is Grandt, from their orginal steam porter kit. The stack is styrene tubing and the bell came from the scrapbox. I carved off the hood handrails and fabricated "stand off" replacements. Both front and rear headlights work. The larger front headlight is a Precision brass casting drilled underneath for a 12v bulb (Decoder is an old DH 121) I still want to build one of those funky, heavy duty front grills alot of them had.
Rear of the cab is fabricated from styrene starting with clear sheet so I could incorporate the windows into the build. Rear headlight is from the scrapbox. Handrails added.

Overall a pretty straightforward conversion of a very inexpensive, good running HO loco. (Ain't this how we all got started!! ) sully

Geeeez Les, you squeezed in before I had PUBLISHED ALL THE RULES!! I went ahead and defined an opening volley of policies. Just enough to probably piss somebody off so let's hear what "ouze guys" think and we'll quickly close the book on the rules....Les, I'm reminded of a certain "Three Stooges" skit where Moe explains the "wrassling" rules to Larry and Curley![:-smile_green] |

*does an end zone dance*
i kid :D
this is the loco that started my mind ticking about starting my on30 layout.

im sure some of you remember the thread for it, but for those who missed it/are new, its a bachmann porter with a backwoods side tank conversion kit and a banta all weather cab. it was agreed half way in that it looked more like an export plantaion loco then anything else, so desided it was built for export to japan but with the outbreak of war, wasnt sent and was sold to the railroad company.

Tom, aka the chairman... Sorry about jumping in, I will go stand in the corner...
This is how the process starts...

and:

I have already broken most of the rules, but I think the important part of this project was the fabrication of a number of parts, and the second re-use of the forney metal cabs. I had actually started to build this project, and ended up building one split tank 2-6-6-2T first.

Alright!....now we're rollin'
Les, only reason I got off my a__ to get this going was because I felt I was going to "drop the ball"...Thanks for the motivation. After all YOU are a "master" when it comes to bashing in On30.[:-tophat]
Andy.....so that's how it all started eh!
John....that's a modification in my book!
Rick.....a really like the addition of the build thread link at the bottom of your posting. This will be a really useful addition when we get "visitors" to our On3) forum in the future, they can quickly reference the original detailed build. Nice!
So guys....looks like a successful launch......let's get some of those kits off the shelves and "get'em out of their boxes".... |

Tom, I was your suggestion all along, I didn't know if someone was waiting for me or not...you got it going tis yours...
This ones not much of a bash...but it does draw the looks at convention..

Its always good to see where they come from before the beauty paint goes on...this was the first split tank 2-6-6-2T before Bachmann came out with theirs and well before Backwoods had one. There is an interesting story of Lee Riley seeing this one in NJ and a twinkle in his eye...little did we all know.

Stock Standard Bachmann Shay arrived at Enterprise. It quickly recieved new sand dome, headlight & stack. An assortment of tools were carried as this little baby had a reputation of having gear problems. It wasn't the case with this one. It ran many miles. Workers were employed to cut extra wood to fuel the beast.
