More progress: I started to work on the frame by building the steps. I used various dimensions of strip styrene. The back of the step assembly was cut from .060 x .156 strip. To it I glued .020 x .125 strip to the sides.

Another .020 x .125 piece was glued to the bottom.

Download Attachment:

I used .020 x .060 pieces for the steps.

Download Attachment:

I set them aside to set up.

That's all for tonight.

Continuing with the frame; I cut two pieced of .030 x .125 strip the same length as the decking. On these, I marked the locations of the steps.

Download Attachment:

Next, I glued the steps in place. The spacer was used to keep the steps level.

Download Attachment:

Once both sets of steps were glued in place, I compared the allignment and made any necessary adjustments.

Download Attachment:

I then cut a piece of .125 x .125 strip to fit in between the steps. Once I was satisfied with the fit, I glued it in place.

Download Attachment:

Why did I use the .030 x .125 and .125 x.125 strip? The distance from the N scale frame on the loco to the edge of the decking was 5/32" (~.156). Combining the strips, .030 + .125 = .155, which puts the outside face of the frame almost even with the edge of the decking.

Once the pieces were all glued together, I test fit one side of the frame with the other pieces on the mechanism.

Download Attachment:

Now to figure out how to make the front and rear frame assemblies.

Jeff - The steps and sills look great, but how low are they when the loco is on the rails?

Jeff, the steps and sills are another nice addition to the critter. It keeps looking better with every step.

Chuck,

Here's a photo. The steps sit outside the railheads. The sill is tacked on with pressure sensitive adhesive and is sagging a bit.

Jeff - Will they hit anything, like switch throws or the diverging rails of a turnout, etc.? It looks like, when applied permanently, they will be right at even with the top of the rail.

They look great, just appear to be a bit low to me.

Woo-HOO!

I wondered about that. You need to haul this thing to the Midwest show so we can see it!
