The next project I hope to finish for the 10th Anniv. Challenge is to convert a Bachmann N scale 70 tonner to HOn30. I have taken some preliminary steps, and will have photos shortly.

Here's what I have accomplished so far. I have removed the cab from the loco and have figured out how to remove the body. In the process, I discovered the the grill above the nose of the loco comes off, exposing the LED. This will make it easy to light the headlight for the conversion.

I have also built the cab of a Grandt Line GE 25 tonner that was left over from a project years ago. This will be the cab for the conversion.

The roof is not glued onto the walls, at this time. It will make it easier to glaze the windows, when the time comes.

I will be scratchbuilding the hood, and will use Cannon & Co. parts for the hood doors.

I will also be using some Archer Transfers to put louvers on the doors.

Looks good, I will enjoy this build. I haven't even finished my Chivers loco, after many years and you are working on your second loco for the challenge. Wow!

Have you looked at any of Boulder Valley Models conversion kits for the 70 tonner?

Right now, the N scale body of the 70 tonner is soaking in a container of 90% isospropyl. I am going to use it as the sub-structure for the build and glue the cab and scratchbuilt hood to it.

Yes, Jeff....I've got the kit. Just got to finish up a couple of "half builds" before I tackle another one.
Actually I'm in the process of doing a Model Power Plymouth "makeover".......even that is "almost" done but still needs a ton of detail and paint weathering......
Looking forward to seeing yours come together....I like the idea of using the Grandt 25 Tonner cab. Should give it a neat look.

Thanks, Sully. The Grandt cab seems to be a natural for the build. I've build two HOn30 center cabs using Grandt line 25 tonner kits. I should post photos of them.

nah i'll post.
i somehow missed in your 1st post that this is the N scale model and not a regauged HO :D :P even better then.
i agree about the cabs, i have a couple on30 chivers GE loco kits and the cab would suit very well just plonked on a stock ho GE 70 tonner, so its no wonder that it'll work well on an hon30 one.
i'll look out for your photos of the centre cabs. they sound nice :) |
