There's some fantastic work being accomplished in this challenge.

Your La Belle caboose is nicely constructed, Bobby. Are you going to seal the wood before you paint it?

That's an impressive building, Randy.

Bobby, I think that you are grading yourself too low.

That in itself is a key accomplishment.

Randy, your project is SICK!! I have rolled more than enough truss in real life to appreciate what you have done there. W-O-W.

Thank you Bruce, that's pretty cool. Getting the couplers correct seems not as scary now. It just went together that way.

George, Yes. I have already shot one coat of shellac on this thing, but it will get another light coat as there are a few more raw pieces on it. Bolsters, queen beams, some fill strips.

With the exception of the fishing line truss rods, I love the Labelle kits. If I substitute .015 rod and queen posts, does that begin my adventure into bashing?

I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN!! I may never run another train, again.

In the vernacular of the young people I work with, SICK is definitely a positive emotion.
Kids these days. What are you gonna do? Can't kill'em, Can't whoop'em. Might as well hang with them and be a positive influence. I work in a hospital and am surrounded with young people who are educated, motivated, kind and friendly. Most are hard workers and most have dreams. I try to not crush their dreams and they love me. I get to be Uncle Bobby.

Thank you all for sharing your projects with me.

Bobby

Sick, indeed! Bobby, I'd love to have that little puppy on the end of any train I run - most worthy, for sure! Great going! [:-star][:-star][:-star]

Randy, your model is a masterpiece even at this stage...a structure under construction. Imperssive modelling! [:-thumbu][:-thumbu]

Week 2

This is the end of the second week of work on my Challenge progect; Port San Luis Pier Warehouse, and with less than nine weeks in total, here's where I am now.

Planning - Done
West Wall - Framing complete except for the three freight doors. I'll complete the framing after I've built the doors.
East Wall - Framing complete except for the three freight doors. I'll complete the framing after I've built the doors.
Roof trusses - 8 of 8, all done
North Wall - framed except for office space
South Wall - complete

Sheathing - South wall sheathed, test battens done
Rafters - nothing
Roofing - nothing - on order
Exterior detail - nothing
Interior detail - nothing
Painting - nothing

Estimate 25% complete

My speed is improving and I am on schedule now.

Bobby, I know I'll be using fishing line for my truss rods. I haven't looked at the queen posts close enough to make a decision, but in general I don't like the softness of their metal castings. Well see...

John, the breakdown of your project reminds me of a certain credit card companies advertising campaign.
You just need to end it like this.
Amount of pleasure attained from doing all of the above "Priceless".

John, those wall frames and trusses look spectacular as they are. Kinda reminds me of my youth when I used to fly those balsa airplanes! [:-eyebrows]

You're right on target for the finish date! [:-thumbu][:-thumbu]

I've built my share of balsa planes and boats in my youth, and a couple of stick-by-stick Sn3 1/2 buildings. I had forgotten how much fun it is.

George, I picked up some 6" queen posts from Grandt Line and some .015 rod from an airplane store. Working on some brake rigging first then the truss rods. Blindly finding my way.

All others. Grandt Line Westinghouse K brake. The short arm has a mount and pivot at the end, but it just seems to attach to nothing at all. Just floating in the air. Now for my model, I guess, I can accept that. But, please look at my drawing and my model and diagnose where I am off. To me, it is clear that the short arm is angled the wrong way. But, then the mount would not line up with anything at all. This way, I could scab in a block under it. OH, and I broke the long arm so there is a piece of flat stock in its place.

The Plan

The plan is for an Sn3, but drawn in 1/4" scale.

Thank you, bobby
