Happy New Year to all!
It has been around two years since the rails were removed from the first version of the Tagish & Marsh Lake Railroad. It is about time I was able to run some trains.
I am starting a new thread with a couple of twists to it. I have had trouble in the past finding my old threads when needed so I am going to insert a links post to make it easier on me to find stuff I have done. 
I also plan on maintaining a table of contents
for the thread so I can find items I need to refer back to. Let's see how long this one lasts. [:-banghead]

The Story
The Railroad will be based in the Yukon in the early 1940's.
The TML was down to its last few dollars of revenue from the gold and silver mines and then the War in the Pacific starts. The US army determines it needs a road in the interior of the continent to supply a line of airfields in the Yukon and Alaska needed to defend the coast if attacked.
The Alaska Highway project starts with the permission of the Canadian Government (The road runs for the most part in Canada).
Troops and supplies start pouring in from every existing transportation link in the area. Used RR equipment is purchased from every narrow gauge line in Canada and the lower 48 states and is sent north for potential use by the White Pass and Yukon and the Tagish & Mash Lake.
Some of the equipment works out and some equipment will not be so useful and is left to rust.

Aha, now that sounds like a plan. I can never find my old threads either and trying to search under my name seems to never work.
Will be looking forward to this as I enjoyed your first one immensely.

Pictures on day one....
Forum member Gomez Adams (AKA my 16 year old son Lars) and I spent the last two days laying track and starting to fit existing structures in a 12 foot area of wall space. We laid the track on used tack boards from an old office, This material hold spikes well and reduces sound vibrations. I purchased eight new but previously owned LITCO switches last week and wanted to give them a try. All eight switches are down and functional.
Some of the track is hand laid, some I went with ME code 83 track to speed up the process.
I drifted from my old plan and wanted to run longer engines. That forced me to rethink loop tracks and opt for turntables. I have a couple of Atlas turntables on hand and had already replanked one of them. So the line ends on the turntable. I added three storage tracks which will force me to build a small wood round house. The location of the round house and existing engine house will hide the turntable from view.This area is very small 2'' deep x 9" wide. An old boxcar will hide the turntable motor.
Next a picture of the yard and engine house entrance. The center track runs to the turntable.
We are using a Foney and Porters to find the track issues.

The town is starting it's birth.
The main line runs down the main street of town just like the 1901 picture 1901 picture and as it did in Skagway Alaska.
The track splits just before town and one track goes behind main street. This will go to hidden staging.
Lots of finishing to do on these structures including roofs, LP, lighting and full interiors. It will take years to finish the town (I am not as quick as Troels) but I will be having fun.
I will add no more than 4 or 5 more structures to town and the main line will curve off to the right.
Well not bad for two days work. Eight switches laid and over 20 feet of track. Gomez is having a blast testing the tracks.

wow, i like what you and your son have done so far, track work looks good, nice to have somewhere too run trains isnt it? and i really like the track layout outside the loco shed, looks about right without being overcrowded. talking of points, what are they? scratch build or brought, i keep seeing you guys in the states using them and i keep meaning to ask.
i will be watching closely :) |
