It's a PRR XL Camp car - MoW car - I believe that this specific one is a Bunk Car. There were quite a few variations of windows and doors for other cars such as the Kitchen Car. There's a series of articles The Keystone Modeler starting back in 2004 about these cars as well another article in Model RR'er back in '53 or '54.

Based on style and materials, this car appears to have originated from that MR article; probably older than me!

I'm calling this one done until I scratchbuild another one along with a few of the other XL camp cars. The more I looked into playing around with the paint, the more impossible it became..... Might do a bit of weathering to it, someday. In the meantime, on to the next in the queue!

Got it disassembled.





Floor is a lost cause, but that's not a problem to build a new floor. Ends are bronze castings with brass treads that are applied. Got to strip them down to the metal, replace the end rails, etc...

The bunk car looks good, Martin. It looks like you have a pretty rough starting point for your passenger car.

Thanks - pretty sure that that bunk / sleeper is older than me. Looking pretty decent, just like me -

Yes, the pass car is rough - a new floor will be pretty straightforward and let me upgrade just about everything along the way.

Fortunately I do not have to clean off the aluminum sides and ends. Some one added some extra ribs made of wood; I think that I actually need those for the car I'm sort of headed towards as a target. Probably replace those with styrene.

This will be a fun restoration - it's an Alexander kit that's depicted in the 1937 catalog,

So, built up a new floor from 2 layers of scribed siding and a basswood blank; mortised out the ends to accept the bronze end castings - paint remover and wire brush - underbody framing, truss rods that are anchored in the layering of the floor, and the bronze ends into the mortises with Goo and CA and also under the top layer of siding/flooring.





Got body bolsters in place for a pair of Lobaugh trucks....

The sides & ends fit nicely on this floor. Now I have to think about the interior :?

Got a little done on this car...

Got a bit of the underbody installed and managed to smooth and even out the roof a bit; have to re-drill holes for the vents - nice brass turned bits under that paint! - maybe some detail about the non-existent clerestory vents to add....



Sides are coming together now and after I shoot a layer of primer I'll have a better idea about that; ends are ok now, too.

Thanks!

One of the things that's been slowing me down has been patching and filling holes where this was originally all screwed and nailed together. I filled the holes in the sides with the heads of some small brass screws after nipping them off. Still had to file, fill, and sand; not sure how decent that will look and if I have to I guess I can apply a veneer of styrene across the top to make the letter board have a bit of depth over the windows. A coat of primer will tell....

Slow going, but the interior is getting done now.





The fun part is that the spacing between every window is different. Every bit of wood has to be custom cut to fit. And, I nicked myself really good 2 days ago and it started bleeding again last night. Last thing I want to do is get blood on the interior - no idea if I can paint over that or not,
