I'll start an early rail thread. This will be for posts about rail cars you've built, one's that have been kitbashed, scratchbuilt, resin kits, wood kits, any pre-WW1 car.
I'll start with my B&O hopper cars. May railroad interchanges witht eh B&O at Wilmington, DE and so would have substanial soft coal business. To support that I needed some B&O coal cars. There is a picture of a B&O hopper in White's book. Looking through the 1900, 1905 ORER's I found about 5000 cars of those same general dimensions.
I took a Life-Like twin hopper, the cheapy, old Varney style and sanded off the ribs and all details. All the ladders were cut off, leaving only the end sill and corner posts.
I then cut 4 ft out of the center of the car to shorten it to 30 ft. The exterior was covered with .020x 1/8" styrene strips. End sills were added from 1/8" square styrene. A hopper bottom was cut from scribed siding and the hoppers were covered with scale 2x8 styrene.
The side posts were made with Tichy stake pockets and scale 4x4 styrene. A walk way was added with strip styrene between the side stakes and then a strip ove the top of the stakes. Grab irons were added from brass wire.
There is the model ready for paint:

For some reason the site won't let me edit my post.
The queen posts are O-scale and heavy brass wire. I used Tichy K brakes, brake platforms and Kaddee brake wheels.

Here is one of the cars painted polly scale roof brown (with some white added to fade the paint):

I lettered them with Art Griffin decals. Here is the string lettered:

For all reading this thread.
The three Administrators (Bruce, Rick and myself) have all agreed with the idea of having an Early Rail forum and we are waiting for Joe to set one up.
Since moving threads from one forum to another especially with pictures is a tedious task maybe you and others will want to wait a day or so for Joe to set up a new forum.

I'm with Greg, thank you for the forum.
Jan who doesn't need references to model suppliers but does need others views on modifying everything for early rail 1860 to 1890 |

| Nice work on the B&O cars Dave. I've been catching sporadic bits of info about your growing roster and layout and am always looking to find out more about your efforts. I hope to be able to contribute to this thread soon also. |

Yeah, this is cool - Early Rail Forum.
The only thing that could make me change my period (1977) is actually a move into the early era. I’m not sure how early though, probabli somewhere between 1900-1925. But maybe, with inspiration from photos in this thread, I could consider even earlier.
I sure will follow this.

Folks, I guess it's time to at least post a picture of some work I've been involved in. While perusing a site showing rolling stock produced by American Car & Foundry, I ran across a picture of a tank car that I really liked. After some very close study, I decided that if I used a little imagination this could be kit bashed into a reasonably representative model. It was built using a Roundhouse small, old time tank, shortening the underframe from a Red Caboose 10,000 gallon tank car to fit the tank, marrying the two and adding some detail such as brake gear, walkways, railings and ladders. I've included a link to the Atlas Car Co. tank and of course a picture of my version of this car. Hope you like it!

Nice looking car, so is it filled with cattle or fruit, given the ventilated boxcars in the background.
I will have a few stockcars on my road. It hauled relatively little livestock. The owner swapped out breeding horses with the King Ranch according to records I tumbled across, so I'll need some horse cars. Probably the most common thing the stock cars on my line would have hauled is pig, pig iron that is. |
