My HO layout depicting North Dover NH and environs hosted the FNG (Friday Night Group) last evening. I believe all attendees are current forum members.

The first train on the evening was "The First Rochester" which is a transfer run from North Dover to a local yard on the outskirts of town (in staging).

Mike and Norm were two of the many fine operators who helped bring the model railroad to life.

Bob seems to be enjoying himself setting out cars for B&M manifest train MP3 (Mechanicville - Portland).

Meanwhile, the First Rochester is spotted heading out of town - to staging.

The train has arrived the yard by Rochester Street (in staging at the duckunder to the layout room).

This is the first section of the layout you see when you approach the room from the crew lounge.

While back in the lounge, David, Norm and Jim enjoy the camaraderie the hobby offers.

As do Mike (foreground), Chris and Bob.

Meanwhile, Chris is found back in the layout room switching out some of the industries in town. Let's have a look see.

Chris and Bob are spotting and lifting traffic to and from industries.

Aboard B&M Alco 1170, they drill the track which serves Haney Fuels and the Holy Spirits Distillery.

Later on, Chris and Norm work Marshall Creamery and assist a passenger train with the exchange of milk traffic.

While engineer Mike (outside the room) and his crewmate David (not shown - inside the room) bring a hotshot frieght train into town.

A trio of F's haul the train around the big curve in North Dover.

This "going away" shot catches the train crossing the diamond with the Maine Central.

Speaking of the Maine Central...I enjoyed the opportunity of bringing this consist into town, spotted here on its' inbound approach to Boundary Road. The headend of this train is in NH while the tail end is across the Salmon River in the state of Maine.

While back out at the workbench, Chris has shared some of the "goodies" he brought back with him from the Craftsman Show.

I shared this 3D photo a friend took of my layout.

Finally, we all talked about the "Ottawa Train Expo" which will be a new railroad show taking place up this way in Ottawa in May. It will be five times bigger than our regular show that has been put on here for many years. It would be great if many of you could make it up this way for the weekend of May 5th and 6th, 2012! |

Ah Ghee Mike, of all the forum members I met during the May CARM convention, I think I only recognize one of them..., I think..., it's been a while..., can't remember... :-)
Anyways, nice to see that you had fun Friday night.

Since next years CARM convention is in a too far away location, I likely won't be attending it, but with checking the calender and being that Ottawa is not too far away, I may be going there instead, since May is usually convention time. :-)

The FNG is Back!! Ooh-RAH!! [:-party] [:-jump2] [:-party]
I've been wondering whether we'd get a chance to enjoy Ottawa Railroading this winter! You folks have some elegant railroads on which to play... er... operate. This is going to be a good winter!

Hi Mike:
Nice to read the FNG is back in operation for another season! It's great catching up. Great photos of your layout, as usual.
Michael p.s. I'll have to install that decoder in my HO RDC so I can run as an extra on your layout sometime soon. |

It was a nice evening to socialize and run some trains.
We'll have to do it again sometime soon Mike... Looks like far into the future at this time. And there cannot be any operating sessions on the 4th of May... |

It was fitting that the FNG group visited David Primeau's incredible Conn River Line layout for train operations last evening...being Remembrance Day...for David's career was spent serving for his country. This is why I'm still sporting a tie late into the evening, having attended a special Remembrance Day ceremony during the day.

Chris loaned me his throttle for this photograph. He was working Newport yard, located near the Canadian/American border. I've always loved that maroon and grey Canadian Pacific scheme.

Mike (Terminator) is caught on film working the south end of the yard. That's Norm in the background working Wells River.

Heading south out of Newport, we eventually make our way to St. Johnsbury where you see me working "second trick". I love this assignment as it can be a "beehive" of action and you've got to keep your eye on the schedule as you continue to spot and lift cars to industries and make up trains. Taking on the second half of the evening's assignment, one of the jobs I had to do was ensure that both the station track and the main were clear for a meet of two passenger trains...while still having a nest of activity on the third track. I cleared the northbound into St. Johnsbury. A short while later, I checked the switch locations at either end of the yard for the southbound and cleared him in as well. In came the southbound, only to hit the ground right in front of the station! Yikes! One of the crossovers in front of the station track had not been thrown back to the main! It had been a long while since I had operated this job, and with the one passenger train in the station already obscuring the crossover, I wasn't aware that the crossover was even there not having needed to use it as yet. Lesson learned for operators taking over an assignment halfway through an operating session...study the track arrangement carefully! Me bad!

Here's looking down the line at St. Johnsbury and you can see the crossovers in front of the station. David has done a remarkable job re-creating all the elements of this location.

...including this landmark structure.

Travelling south out of St. Johnsbury, we spot David's superb rendition of another famous landmark structure, the round barn.

A rural road on the northern outskirts of Wells River.

At Wells River, we spot Norm deep in concentration.

Ya gotta love David's rendition of the Full Steam Ahead hotel which he has placed at Wells River.

Another landmark structure, the station in the wye at Wells River.

Southbound out of Wells River, we arrive at White River Junction. Here's Ron (elwoodblues) singing to himself as he works the trick!

A snippit of the action at WRJ.

David (to the left) has created a New England masterpiece in his home...a joy to operate...and Norm is one happy operator dressed for the occasion.

Joel, our fearless organizer this year!

Good buddies, Jim and Bob enjoying some camaraderie in the crew lounge.

Chris and Mike too.

Dave is showing me a photograph he is referencing for work he is doing on a CP steamer.

Great results, Dave! David is not afraid to take on any modelling task, no matter how tedious or time-consuming...a true modeller. Thanks for a great evening of train ops, Dave! |
