Thanks for posting this one Joe. Sunday November 13th is a great line up of layouts local to south Jersey, including Arnold Kimons and Mike McNamarra from right here on the forum (two GREAT layouts not to miss), as well as a new comer, Doc Patti for you On30 fans. If you can't make them all, DON'T MISS DOC PATTI'S LAYOUT! Trust me, this one is worth the trip. And oh, by the way, I'll be at John Rahenkamp's layout again so I hope to see some of you guys there.

Mark

The Burlington County Courier interviewed 2 RRL members about model railroading and the open houses this month (myself and akimmons). Some of it reads pretty funny (i.e. my platform, my 35 train sets I have!) to a model railroader. Hopefully though it will help spread the word and maybe open the hobby up to a few more folks.

Mike nice read thanks for sharing. It is funny as how misunderstood the hobby can be at times. I do have two questions though, How did the reporter find out about this and were you comfortbale sharing your address? I also noticed they did not include the link to the open houses?

Joe,

Even though we get great attendance at Division Meet events, the public showings have not been as successful year to year. This I know has lead some layout owners to drop out.

The article idea started out after a discussion at John Rahenkamp's about this dwindling attendance at the northern layouts while PJ, Skinner and the rest down south see record crowds every year. They get a mention every year in the newspaper and that has helped, so we decided some publicity might help. I sent an e-mail to the BCT newspaper and a reporter got back to me. They made arrangements to send the reporter and a photographer as well as a video crew out.

The reporter asked about how this was coordinated and I mentioned the web site and gave PJ's phone number as a contact. I believe she then contacted Arnold for his input after talking to PJ.

The reporter did call me back and indicated that Bruce Friedmann asked that the web site not be put in the newspaper article. I am not 100% sure why but I guess he was not comfortable being in a position to authorize access to peoples addresses, even though it is out there on the internet.

I believe they may not post the video now because it did include the web site address.

Regarding having my address in the paper, I guess I don't really see it as too big a deal. Everyone has an address and I am not a public figure or anything where i am trying to hide that. All of us who open our houses at one point or another I guess face this issue. Being in the newspaper I suppose makes it more public, but I don;t really have an issue with that personally. But I can understand others who do have an issue.

Now an interesting side note to this is that the Courier Post also ran an article today on National Model RR Month. This was not at my suggestion and actually has lots of other stuff besides this open house schedule. I was contacted via e-mail through the NJ Division web site and the reporter called me for a short interview. The Courier actually does have the web site but I did not give them that address. I did mention that many layouts were open all month and that there was a web site where this information was coordinated. The reporter seems to have figured it out on her own, but may have seen the link to the web site on the NJ Division web site.

Joe, Mike,
I mentioned the web site also. The reporter indicated that Bruce was not comfortable publishing the web address to the general public. I didn't feel it was appropriate to go against his wishes since he is the organizer.
I agree with Mike that there is only a minor increase in risk but others must feel differently. My wife is our "greeter" and stays upstairs to welcome guests and keep tabs on them so no one gets to roam around unattended. We also make sure laptops, etc. are not in plain sight or near the door. Just common-sense stuff.

I have never opened my layout during these November open houses. For one reason, I don't have a layout worth showing yet! Secondly, if I'm not working, I'm usually helping someone out who is open. But to be honest, I have a low comfort level of opening my door to just anyone who can read a paper or the internet. I enjoy the open houses in conjunction with an NMRA meet as those are 'regulated' in the sense that you have to be a member to have access to the information. We will see in a year or two when my layout is at the point of showing, maybe then my feelings will change. I agree with Mike - this is a great opportunity to introduce prospective newcomers to our hobby. It is ashame that we live in an eviroment that some of us have these concerns though.

I will always have grave doubts about any open house that would allow someone like me to visit...LOL.

On a serious note, my chief concern is liability....not 100% certain if my homeowner's insurance anticipates something like this....maybe that's something we should all check.

Very good point Rick. I know if your hosting an NMRA event and you are a member, your supposed to be covered. that is the main reason I joined the NMRA.

I have a good friend who's in the insurance business and plan on him the question just to make sure. The cynic in me says that the carrier will find some excuse not to cover a claim after the fact, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for doing some research Rick. I'd like to know if there are any liability concerns. I enjoy sharing my layout and hopefully inspiring others to join the hobby. But it's not worth risking financial ruin. Keep us posted.

For those that were open, how was your attendance? Dave Skinners was packed which is where I was assisting, but he hits the bricks and distributes a whole bunch of flyers at train shows, and crowded public and private palces.

Dave encourages us to give the kids a chance at the throttle, which I was glad to do if I thought they could handle it. I overheard one 6 yr old boy after running a train with me for a while, tell his dad on the way out. This is the greatest day ever! I hope we hooked him as he gets older.
