I'm truly sorry Duane, A second look at the picture does indeed show that the engines are painted. [:-banghead][:-banghead][:-banghead] I guess what threw me off was that they were so bright and clean.

The last model picture is simply amazing, there are no clues that it is a model.

I'm not a fan of modernism, but I make an exception for the Phelps Dodge Company Store building in Bisbee, inside and out. Here's a photo from someone on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterl/4590853084/in/photostream/

Great pics of the classic architecture!

The shot of your layout is stunning! And inspiring! Not only the high quality of the models and scenery, but also the realistic spacing of the structures and their relationship to the terrain. Makes me wish, once again, that I had the space to model my towns and mines more realistically and wasn't forced to compress and cram everything together so much.

Once again, thanks for the comments and compliments.
Ron-No worries on the unpainted loco comment-they are pretty shiny, and the yellow stripe is subtle. As Vern quickly identified earlier in the thread, it is based on a paint scheme used by the Magma Arizona Railroad. Here is a link so as not to steal Robert Palmer's fine picture without credit:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=53948
As a footnote, both the Magma Az RR and the Cananea Copper Co., two of the influences for my T & P, took alot of pride in maintaining their diesels, in most pics they appear spotless.

Dave-good call on the Phelps Dodge store in Bisbee, cool building, great place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in a great atmosphere.

Ray-Thats about one of the nicest compliments Ive had. Space is the reason Ive been struggling with this scene for a long time, I tried about a dozen combinations to make it look like a authentic historic landscape and finally ended up extending the foreground 6" to make it work.
One of the downsides of Modernism is that it usually stresses the horizontal rather than the vertical. This means that it is hard to find prototypes that dont sprawl. As a comparison, Malcom Furlow used (exaggerated)Gothic and Italianate buildings which stressed the vertical, allowing him to get the feel of a busy scene in comparatively little space.

Bisbee is a great town to visit, and some of the best meals I've ever had were at Cafe Roka.

And the Copper Queen Hotel restaurant has a killer steak chili, we enjoyed some on the patio overlooking the historic main street on a nice say several years ago. I love old mining towns, and your photo really conveys the mood, Duane!

Here is an interesting little building in Morro Bay, CA. Moderne but not sprawling. Smaller than it looks here. Our pics are only of the tower, too many cars parked in front for more pics at the time.

One of those "where did that come from" buildings that sprung up along a major highway, in this case on Highway One between Morro Bay and Monterey. Probably inspired by the Hearst Castle which is maybe 25 miles or so further along to the left. Most of the rest of Morro Bay is pretty bland architecturally.

That first link doesn't seem to go to the street view. Usee Google Maps, go to 1610 Morro Bay Blvd, Morro bay, CA and go to street view, or view in panaramio, whichever seems to make itslf available. It appears to have been the main building of a construction company at some time in the not too distant past.

Ive always enjoyed vintage postcards, and was playing with photoshop to try and capture the eel of those early rppc cards with the funky colors and hues: Of course the ice machine looks a little out of place...

Duane, that's a great photo, and your vintage postcard treatment is spot on in my opinion. The foreground structures and scenery are very convincing, and I especially like the adit and pile of mine waste on the side of the ridge. A very typical sight nicely modeled. Will this be the first of a postcard selection? I'd like to see more!

I especially like this composition with an ore train, to enhance the illusion of depth and distance between the train and the foreground structures. Or, perhaps with this train traveling the reverse direction so the large combine would be towards the back of the scene - just my preference.

Excellent work on that postcard! At first glance, before I read the text, I thought it was an authentic old-time postcard.

Duane,

Great postcard, was looking for clues to give it away, couldn't find any. The ice machine may be out of place but it doesn't jump out at you.
