cheers john :)

back in 2010, i started a flat car to fill some time while waiting on some stuff for my sidetank porter. basicly, one of larry's flat car castings, with a steel plate deck, not really prototipicaly, but i dont really care, my railroad :D made a nice change from wood i thought. anyway, i didnt get far, since the parts for the porter turned up and i carrie don with that, then made a start on the layout soon after. so sat in a box since.
this is where i left the project, and picked it up again

fame with trucks, couplings, and the deck not fixed to the frame, however i wish i did. in the time since then and yesterday, it had warped quite badly

oh by the way dallas, 162 rivets. :D

need something to try out this ak chipping fluid. so what better then this? needs paint so...

on with my normal "steel" paint, a rough mix of vallejo paints.
and with the F1 in the back ground, i started to apply some rust with a spunge and some old railmatch "light rust" and carft black to darken, all "rust" paints i find too orange, or too red. again playing around with shades rather then a single colour. may add more latter.

yet to deside what the top colour will be, i know it should be the same red oxide as the car frame, but i may go gray to show up the chips and rust etc.

and whats that to the right? looks a bit small.
yup thats not on30

couple years ago i picked up a Z scale caboose for all of 50p. havent been able to sell it since, so built it for a bit of fun. too small for me though

thanks for stopping buy :)

Andy,

Interesting choice of decking material, I like it a lot. The rusted deck is looking great.

thanks guys!

well larry, the car frames you sent me look better then some of the resin castings ive had from so called companies doing this for a living so its pretty easy. a little tweak here and there, quick sand to level the top and away i go :)

thanks ron!

remembered i had yet to make the trucks for the hopper cars, so put them together and added a little paint. painted the wheels. one will have the BVM trucks with larger wheels, and the other with the smaller, put some coupleings on the tank car, its hard to tell, but i did paint on some oil stains, but im waiting on my order whitch has a brush on glossy vanrish. so that will hopefuly make the tipical shiney oily muck. then that will be another car done

sooooooooo ak interactive chipping fluid, cheap gimmick, or great product?
you tell me

:D

compairing it to hairspray, this stuff chips more "scale" sized chips, rather the giant junks of paint like hairspray, this dosnt smell, drys quickly and WORKS.
i did 4 tests, all with the same base as the boxcar, i tested it under tamyia, neat, craft paints, mix of craft and tamyia, and polly scale neat. like hairspray, under the craft paints it crackled. bummer, worked slightly better under the mix, however under tamiya and pollyscale it worked really well, tamyia slightly better, i think pollyscale has a better "grip" (well it is the only paint id use on bare resin.)

so with that in mind, i brushed on (since i dont have an airbrush) two thin coats of the chipping fluid onto the car deck, leaving each to dry fully, after the 2nd coat i left for another 20mins after drying, as i found with my tests that brushing on fresh but dry fluid made the paint drag and clog. then a mix of tamyia german gray and another gray with a drop of alcohol, was brushed on. and left to dry. i left mine for 3 or 4 hours.
so like hair spray i blotted on some water, let it sit, then i started "picking" at it with a toothpick, however, unlike hairsprey where you can see the great lumps of paint being removed, this stuff almost makes the removed paint dissolve, and so i couldnt see if it was working, so in some spots i accidently chiped the paint, and removed some patches of the paint under that, and into the paint i had on the deck long ago. opps. so lession 1, becareful, brush away the chipped paint often, then you can see whats been removed.

then tried out a short, stiff brush, brushing carefully in one direction i was able to remove large sections in a short amount of time. to make it easy for you, all the edges, and any straight-ish looking lines, where done with the tooth pick, everything else, the brush.

if you have tried the hairsprey method, this is worth a try if you have had trouble getting it to work well.

and just a quick update on the porter.

this is where i am so far, the story so far, after being posted as surplus to needs on a railroad in alaska, it was listed for sale in a small railroad magazine, and was purchased, along with another porter from the RIP track and shipped to iowa, where apon inspection and a test run along the line, found the fuel bunker was too small, so a tender was sourced, at the same time the loco enter the works where she was cleaned up, repainted, and fitted with a new chimy and front pilot. she is nearly ready to enter service once the rest of the paint has been done, and the 1940's crew can figure out what the green and siver thing is connected to wires is!

in the real world, its had a quick rewire to find a fualt gained in shipping, tender, as already documented, paint so far is pollyscale engine black, i mixed the red then the black gets a "damp dry brush" (ok i dont know the term, i used a damp wetter brush and a very small amount of paint) with a mix of tamiya flat black and german gray mix then it just need some decals, weathering and fix the chimey on.

Looks good, Andy!

I am always a little reticent to use bright red on any of my locos and / or rolling stock, but the scarlet panels on your Porter look great!

Andy,

Looks like that "heavy chipping" paint works well, have to see where I can get it here.

The porter turned out great as well.
