thanks tom.

john, yeah i agree, it is rather strange, while everyone else is busy looking for pics of shiny clean rust free photos of cars and trucks, we're busy looking for ratty rust pits for insperation, and thank you. its intresting what you can pick up from a DVD

thanks guys!

so, ive started grassing the layout, trying out by playing around on bits of wood, and gaining advise from others, i laid a nice layer of glue and misted with water then set about laying grass as you normaly would with a grassmater, nothing magic.

i was waiting for an order of more static grass before i started, but it seams a mix up at the factory means i got fresh green rather the froest green, so rather then a nice short dark fibre, i have short, bright neon green, darmn.
so i was thinking what to do, i dont want to wait weeks for a replacment, nor can i really affrod to spend much, if anymore money, and while thinking, i was stroking my soon to be removed stubble and it hit me.

i was given a shaver/clipper a couple years ago, it came with about 5 different heads and gards, for trimming hair, eyebrows etc and though "heck i might as well shave it" so tried out on a sample.

this is the shaver and the heads i used, two are clippers, one very small, and the other, as you can see larger, there is a larger one in the set too, and a standard electric razor style head and these are my findings.

the clipper stlye heads, thanks to their shape i am able to trim the fibres quickly and to some kind of uniform hight, buy useing it at an angle i can taper the edges of grass, as you often see on bodies of grass, shorter, darker grass around the edges, longer in the centres. follow that triming with (or useing on its own) with the standard razor head and it cuts random strands, giving random hight to the grass, and TBH with careful use, dose look a bit better then useing different hight grasses as are from the bag, and IMHO looks better.

turns out its hard to photograph grass in the dark, evern with lights on and flash. so this will have to do

hopfuly what you can make out is where it gose from 4 and 6mm grass, with an extra layer of 6mm fibres applied later, tapering down towards the left to sub 4mm (maybe around 2-3mm) lenght, with just a little "tuff" of longer grass, all at random lenght. and another plus, besides being able to control the hight after applying grass, is that once collected, i have shorter grass ready to be reused!

however, since im off for a week soon, nomore shall be done to the layout, ive applied grass, and hoovered off the exsses and started on another batch of brushes.

Hey Andy,

Maybe it will grow wild during your absence, and you'll have to cut it all again when you get back...[:-banghead]

(Just like the 1:1 stuff out in the back yard..)

Have a good trip, mate.[:-bouncy]

John.

hay john, gosh i hope not! :D thanks, i had a great trip.

been busy since i got back with starting to grass the layout, looks so different, still alot to do, but have most of the larger ereas done, ready for second layers, ground foam, bushes etc will need to make a template to apply the watered down glue though. (will just cut "random" holes in some thin plastic sheet)
tried to keep the edges only darker grass, a made a little template cut cutting random ripples and shapes along the edge of some plastic sheet, a british modeller, barry norman, used something like this as a template for spray glue for fixing corse turf along hedges/walls etc, took the idea, i layed glue, held the template over it, used the grassmaster and its worked "ok" could have made the ripples larger, but it'll work, i have also shaved these darker edges and IMHO shaving works better then using smaller darker grass anyway, i can get a nice steady difference in lenght that once cleaned up with the standard razor head, looks quite good (no photos yet :D)

ive also been busy stick down details, and grass tuffs in the garage, as well as figureing out the placement of other details else where on the layout, having painted most of these details some months ago, its nice to see them on the layout. heres some photos. please feel free to tell me if you think ive over looked some items that i could add (mostly to the junk yard)
(photos came out a touch lighter thanks to my phone.)

then in the garage's yard

i should have taken one with the long section of fence removed (not glued it in place) then you could have seen the nice pile of jerry cans, fresh from the war thats just past ive since alos made a tyre pile too.

i think i need more car parts like doors/wings etc, but the fun of this hoppy is that i can come back later and add more.
thanks for looking.

I like it, Andy. Maybe a few weeds on the track side of the fence could add a little green there.

thanks, i doubt anyone has martin :D :P but ive had to.

thanks frederic, oh dont worry, plenty more grass to come yet :) im working from the front to the back with the static grass applicator, as well as from the back, (so whats behind the fences) once im happy that i dont need to do much behind the fences, they'll be fixed and i'll add greenry along the fence line. :)

thanks guys!

arthur, thanks very much, the problem with that is im looking back at work and thinking "crap that looks rubbish now" :p luckly most things can be changed if i feel it needs :d

thank you john,

thanks rick, name added :D

thanks larry, nice to see you around!

got my order from BVM today, very pleased, so tempted to start building, however i dont like to many projects at once, so will be left for a little while (till we get dark and cold..) will try and get the layout down tomorrow, get the smaller backscene boards off, remove one of the stores, and see if i can do anything about the backscene where its lost its tack. will also grass across the board joints and pretty much every other spot that would be hard to do with one of the backscene boards in place.

thanks for all the nice comments guys!

After you've shaved the grass for a few years, you'll find that more and more gray blades start to appear ...
