well ive been playing around with tile grout, 1st i forgot my ref photos for the shop, but i picked out two shapes, one "barley sugar" and another "origanl vanilla" got home and dug out my notes, i desided on 3 different tests, one with just wet water onto the grout, one with just grout laid onto neat PVA and another laid onto neat PVA with wet water on top, all had the same affet, to dusty and loose on top, so 50/50 water pva was put ontop and next day all where rock solid, but to be safe i'lls tick with onto PVA and the wet water, followed with glue mix once dry. i also found when it gets to wet, it looses it textrue, it looks to much like flour when put on, but once weted looks like little clumbs.
ive yet to start the layout yet, im waiting on some flight/music case handles to come to add to the end boards, save me getting it down and un boxed more then i have too. im also going to work from the front to the back.
this is the best photo i could get, the photo of the photo looks a little light, but the grout is dead on, and a very fair match for the ref photos (just a touch darker)

and once again vicky my cat wanted to have some part in the photo. |

Hi Andy,
Things are progressing nicely. You should be very proud of your excellent work.[:-bouncy]
As to your purry-furry assistant: we have seen the odd glimpse of her black and white fur and feet, and now we learn that her name is Vicky...
How about a full size pic of her?[:-love][:-kitty][:-love]
Many thanks,
John.

thanks john. yeah things seam to be getting there, thats the plus to smaller layouts i guess. but i like to try new things with new layouts and ive lost count of the new things, most have come from this forum. everything from A&I to tile grout.
heres the little fluffy assistant when she found my HO layout while that was being built, she dose have a habbit of stuff like this, she was also a good test to see how strong the fenceing was for the on30 layout, when she spent a night a sleep on that. and also with the on30 one since it fits on the table and can be run, the amount of times she noticed something moving about (loco) and jumped up for a closer look, only to not like being bumped into when she sits acroos the track.

A bit out of scale, but nice detail, Andy.

frederic, yeah, but to be fare at the time i was jumping between ho and o scale. i was bound to get one detail wrong :D
dave shes quite careful when she wants to be, we got her as a rescue animal, as a slightly older kitten, we think she was never played with as a kitten because shes just not bothered by cat toys, a string she will chase for 3-5mins before she figures out its not something she can eat, so she just nosies around while being fairly careful. thanks john.
i'll be getting the layout down today so i can do somework on the ballest, i want to colour ajust some parts where locos would stop often. also if my handles turn upto day i can fit those and maybe make a start on tile grouting the layout. with anyluck |

hahaha
to tell the true she could be classed as a scale cat, despite being a adult shes really small. :P
no photos, yet but ive been plodding on with tile grout, the front "layer" (i.e. everything infront of the 1st set of rails) is covered, as well as the patch between the headshunt and the farmsupply siding, and the road crossing, having never used it before (apart from my test patches) im really impressed with it, i also made a "buffer" at the headshunt with a neat pile of grout and a tie (off cut of scale 6"x4") rock solid and looks the part. ive also had a rethink about the trailer, because of how close it is to tracks ive deside agaist the deck and awning i was going to make, instead ive gone with a set of steps. still keeping the bricks etc, ive cut out a bit of plasticard to stick said bricks too, so i can grout around (and so under the tariler) before plonking it on the layout. and because i have 5 mins i planted some "plants" in the little flower pots i got from a dolls house suppler for out the front of the trailer.

things seam to be falling into place
the tile grout has worked a treat, im really please how well it's come out, ive also added some ballest and real dirt to the mix in places too.

as you can see what will be the largest open dirt section is done, and the 1st item stuck on the layout, that being the tiny wooden platform.
the road crossing took a while to build it up to rail hight as well as getting the colour right, i did a test on some scrap to figure out when to put in tire track makes, turns out to be about an hour after glueing, not to deep, not to shallow, but held the tyre detail ok.
i think i'll just put in a few planks between the rails, im sure most small less used crossing would have just been covered in dirt, but leaveing room for flanges never looks right, even if something is put between the inside of the rail.
i also made a base for the trailer, i desided agaist having a deck and awning, once i took more time to see just how close it was to the track thought it would only cramp things up, so ive desided to go with just dirt, and steps (not shown) i also need to scatch build a table at some point for the guys type writer.

just a question, roughly how wide and thick where the boards used to deck loading docks? just incase anyone knows here.
ive also cut the wood for the backscene from some thin MDF left over from our bathroom remodel, (where i got the ply from for the baseboards) however some spots have fuzzed alittle and im not sure if that would affect the paper backscene of not, i may well paint the MDF 1st to seal it, and i may also put some lining paper over that and under the paper backscene. i may ask else where on the forum too
im hopeing this current pace dosnt drop off. my only worry is that soon i need to buy a grassmaster and some grass, best price ive found was £130, but that includes 3 bags of silfor grass, money is tight, however should i need to take a "time out" to save money i have a mack style rail bus kit i want to dig into |
