Next I used some scrap sheet balsa to block off the back, between the new shelf surface which will represent the water, and the existing layout edge. This is NOT attached to the layout, it comes away with the shelf when I roll it away. It is what I will model the sea wall against. Since it will mostly be pilings I painted the back flat black in case any shows between the pilings.
The added bonus it this. There is a new structure that I have been wanting to make but I had no room for it. I think I can wiggle some space on this shelf on the far left side, enough for the new structure.

I thought that using dowels for pilings in large scale would look too uniform, like broom handles. I had some 1/2 inch balsa sheet on hand from an old project so I ripped it into 1/2 x 1/2 strips. I then roughly carved off the corners to make them a rough hex shape in cross-section. A quick sanding with course sandpaper knocked off the carved edges and also gave the pilings some "grain". They were then treated with an ink-alcohol mix. I don't have a fornula, I just add black and brown ink to a bottle of alcohol until I get a color I like. The stone walls are two pieces of resin wall that I bought years ago at a model RR show. I painted them as shown and then used an ink alcohol wash to darken the spaces between stones.

Now I have added the seaweed along the tide line. I used a mixture of a fall scenery mat pulled out to thin strips, crushed brown leaves, and a few small pieces of scenery clusters, all held in place with gloss medium. I have to wait untill that dries and then give it a black wash. Then I will have to deal with the water and several details that I want to add.

This part of building the waterfront requires lots of waiting for the paint and gloss medium to dry so I want to get started on that structure I have been wanting to build. First I must give some background. While following a string on this forum by UKGUY (Karl A.) building a lighthouse, he showed a photo of several of his structures on a shelf. I fell in love with one of them, a typical New England structure in shape and look. It had signs on it but the photo was too small for me to read them. Anyway, when I told Karl how much I liked it and wanted to make one similar, he told me that his was an O scale copy of the Fos Scale HO super kit of Lightmann's Army & Navy store. It's many years since I worked in HO scale so I did not know the kit existed but it is fantastic!!
WOW!! When I was a kid I spent much time in our local Army/Navy store and it was near the waterfront in my home town. I decided to make a similar structure, not a copy, but one that would retain the "flavor" of this building. I had to settle on doing the main structure only and even that I had to selectively compress in order to make it fit on the stone section on the left of the waterfront. I thank Karl A. and Doug Foscale for the idea and the look and signage. My making this model is a complement to both of them. My cut down version is of course in 1/24 scale. I started it off in traditional manner with board by board added to a foamcore sub wall.

Just checked the progress, and saw what a cute little version of Sabino you've produced! A very nice build!
Not too keen on the blue water though.... A bluebrowngreengrey tone of sorts, with a couple of gloss glazes over would give the boat more suitable companionship! IMHO of course! |

Troels, Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. I am a fan of your 200 + pages !!! I agree on the water color, that was an undercoat. I will be going with the blue-gray-greenish paint later today hopefully. The waves will have to wait a bit as I think I may want to add more "stuff" that would be in the water, maybe a rowboat or little float. Although I love the waves you have created I will have to go with a simpler small chop in the harbor. Cheers, |

The store front of this model will be built up from styrene as a seperate piece, however, I see that I will need quite a few windows and doors otherwise. To save time I have created a file to have my Cricut machine cut the window and door pieces from heavy carstock. It happens to be green cardstock but they will be painted to match the trim of the structure.

Well, it's either the lighting or my poor photography, but the water looks plain blue in these photos. It's actually blue and gray and green. You can see a little of the green in the second photo I think. Anyway, I will have to let it go for a while because I want to add some waves but must wait to decide if I want to add a small boat or float.

Here's how that Army Navy store is looking right now. I have the four sides of the main building done except for adding the "glass" in the windows. I need to tack these together to determine how little space I have for a lean-to on the side. This is MUCH compressed from the orriginal but I hope it carries the flavor. It has to fit in a very limited area.

Great looking start to the structure Bob, its coming along very nicely and swiftly too. Your compression has succeeded in retaining the feeling of Dougs original.
Many thanks for your compliment on my version, I cant wait to see what you do with yours..... especially in the storefront.
