| I love all the scratch built details, Bob. I think that I'll have one of those donuts and a cup of coffee. |

Hi Bob,I have just returned from the labour camp up north.(Also known as our cottage.) The diner is looking really great! Now then, you know that I have called you a lot of things in jest over the span of this thread. A new name just occurred to me,that I have not called you yet. You really are the "Norman Rockwell" when it comes to modeling. Like him, you seem to tell a story with your scenes and places out of America's past, and with perfect details. Your models like Rockwell's paintings are a joy to view, and they take you on a very pleasant trip down memory lane! Now stop reading this and get back to watching the Olympics!

Thanks Greg and Dallas. I'm back on line here at the forum (really enjoyed the Olympics) and ready to get back to work. Of course there are other things around the house that I let go while I watched TV for most of the day, every day. That plus the air conditioning isn't working right so I have to get the repairman in to look at it (and make it right I hope). I'm sure I'll find time to do some work on the White Tower, it is so close to completion.
Cheers, Bob |

Hooray! The newspaper open to the funnies is a great touch! Love all the wonderful details and the interior shots that give us a good view of those ... but those last few looking in from outside are the "clincher" shots. Very nice ... and thanks for the coffee fix!

Thanks again for your quick return! |

Greg and Dallas, as always, thanks for your comments.
Dallas, you old eagle-eye, yes the newspaper is open to the comics !!
While I'm at it, let me say a few words about old newspapers. In the 40's they were wider than they are today. I have some that the family saved and a page measures 17 x 23 inches as opposed to today's paper at 12 x 22 inches. Makes a big difference when spread open.
I also have some great books that my local newspaper put out years ago full of full page repros of their newspapers. They are a little smaller than original at 11 x 14 inches but easily readable. There are 3 volumes, each of 156 pages with all kinds of info, ads, photos, etc, that are great for model reference. vol I - JAN 40 to DEC 41 vol II - JAN 42 to DEC 43 vol III - JAN 44 to DEC 45
I use some high resolution scans for my model newspapers but I cannot post them here, the Forum will not allow such large files. I do have those and also some mid resolution files that I could send as email attachments if anyone needs them. Below are some low resolution scans that may be usable to most scales that you can save and print out to your scale. You'll have to adjust the size of each.
A front page and a back page with a departent store clothes ad.

An entertainment and the funnies oages.

The sports and food store market pages.

Hope you can use them. Cheers, Bob |

Looking forward to the next project but I shot down three ideas today !!!!
Found drawings for an outstanding RR station but it turns out it would be WAAAAAAY too Big in1/24 scale.
Found a photo I had saved long ago of a very ornate corner building. Fantastic. Problems: 1. I have only that one photo and I don't remember where I found it, lots of guesswork. 2. It's low resolution. When I tried to enlarge it to see more detail it went to pixels.
Rememberd one I wanted to build long ago but when I got out the material I had I just couldn't get excited about it.
Will try again tomorrow.

This is not 100% sure, but I think I have decided on my next project. Over the years I have always liked the HO scale kit of the Silver Plume Bakery by Banta Modelworks (I think they may no longer be in business). Every time I saw the photo of it in their ads I would think I would like to do that one in 1/24.
If I do it, I will have to do some guess work because all I have is that photo from the ad and it only shows two sides. Also, if I do it I think I will flip it over, mirror image, so it fits better for my needs. That's why scratchbuilding is wonderful.
I'll let this old brain run with that a while.

I've always liked the look of that structure too Bob. I can picture the front windows, just chocked full of sgtbob's home baked sculpy goods! And your old brain, will have it all figured out before most younger brains can even think of it. Now get cooking!
