A few things I forgot to mention in that last post.
Yes, John, the original model instructions have you gluing the parts to three different thinknesses of card stock, think, medium, and thin, but they thicknesses suggested are for Bittish 00 scale (similar to American HO). Because I enlarged the model so much I had to sort of judge what to use. In my case I use foamcore when thick card is specified and two thinner cards I have found for the others. Sometimes you also need to double up for thickness. The results (not too evident in my photos) is quite a nice 3-D effect.
Yes, I plan to make interiors for at least those large shop windows. I have started to do so but it will be a hit and miss long range job, a fill in while I work on other things. |

If you look back you will see (if you can read the signs) that the three storefronts that need filled are a radio store, a beer & ale store, and a furniture store. I have been making 1/24 scale beer cases showm below. I have a start of several vintage radios, and I have some 1/24 scale doll house furniture on order.
That will take care of them all and I am still not sure you will be able to see any of it.[:-banghead]

I got enough "stuff" into the big windows so that they do not appear empty. Remember, these are practically building flats, not very deep.
As suspected, I set one in place and you cannot see the ground floor because of the foreground structures. I have a little room left and may elevate then a bit. You see ground level on my layout is really about eye level for the observer.

I've been moving them around and I think I will stay with this. I have the groundwork to finish in that area but it is easily reached from behind. I can also still move the structures around without much trouble. They are not against a wall, I can walk behind these structures.
I also notice the the American Chandlers is leaning back a bit, I need to make a clip to keep it straight.

I have a Railway Express Agency building on my layout and some REA cars on the rails and I needed some vehicles to park at the terminal. This first one was simply new signs added to a Danbury Mint Mail Truck (1931 Ford)

This one was a simple repaint job on a Danbury Bud delivery truck.

But I wanted one of those big boxy shaped trucks that REA had, similar to this HO model kit offered by Sylvan Scale Models.

I chose this Bud truck from Danbury for the conversion. I know they are expensive but you can get some really good deals on Ebay, especially if they are missing details such as the beer cases or better still if they are damaged. Since I will be cutting it apart, damage does not matter. This will not be an exact copy of the Sylvan truck since I am basing it on the 1939 White truck, but it will be close.

I have to let the model building go for a while to do a major update to the computer system.
I have found that REA used the basic box body on many different frames, Ford, Chevy, and many others so I guess the White chassis is not out of line. In the 30's and 40's these trucks were as common as the UPS brown trucks today.
Here's where I am right now. Got the truck disassembled which required some metal surgery to remove the cab, door hinge lugs, and running boards. I will use only the floorboard controls, dash, and steering wheel from the interior and I must still remove all the stake pockets.

I then added a nice heavy .060 styrene floor on which to build up the box body. If you have followed any of my previous string you will know that I will be in heaven piling on the STYRENE to make the body and all it's details.

Well, lots of outside work to be done this time of year but I did find time to get the basic box constructed, all styrene.
Sliding doors open.

Sliding doors closed.

Next will be the roof section and then massive masking and painting before small details and decals are made and applied.
The rubber bands are just to keep the hood from flopping around as I handle the model to work on it.

It's always very interesting to watch this kind of transformation on a truck, Bob. I'm looking forward to see more of it.

Thanks Frederic, and they are fun to do too.
Here's the finished truck. The funny thing is that I made a nice set of decals for this truck and then I happened to be reading about a restoration job on a real such truck and I learned that the signs were not painted on the trucks, they were made separately and then applied to the trucks. I then printed the signs on paper, colored the edges, and glued them in place.
Interest in this string seems to have died off so I think I'll let it go for a while and work on something else.
Cheers, Bob
