Hello, I'm fairly new to the forum and just trying to learn my way around. I am a long time scratchbuilder and one of my favorite model RR projects if building structures. The LP&N RR is a 1/24 scale indoor model railroad. Currently there are something over 50 structures on the layout. One was made from a Muella kit, all the others are scratchbuilt. I live in south central Pennsylvania, Lower Paxton Township, between Harrisburg and Hershey and not far from Gettysburg. I was born and grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a seaport town. You will notice a Pennsylvania/Massachusetts flavor on the freelance Lower Paxton & Northern RR which is set in the early fall of 1941. Over the next few months I hope to post many photos but for now, lets see if this thread starts OK.
Cheers,
Bob

Bob,
Looking forward to the pictures.

I noticed in another thread you asked about resizing pictures to post here on the forum

Here are 3 links to threads on the forum that help with this process.

http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15110
(For general instructions on posting photos/drawings/graphics)

http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5383
(For instructions on resizing photo files)

http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18629
(For instructions on how to post photos/graphics when using a Mozilla-based browser.)

The second thread explains how to resize using XnView which is a free photo editing software that many here use.
While any program will work I have found that if I resize a photo so that the longest side is 720 pixels then it gets under limit for size on the forum.

Good luck and if you need more help just ask.

George and John, Thanks for your encouragement. I have no problem uploading photos, it's just that when I resize to between 100 and 125kb as stated, the photos are smaller than some I see on other strings. This will be a learning process.
Cheers,

Great dioramas on your website Bob.

I really like the models on the submarines with the water surface and then the bulk of the model suspended from it - very effective

Most of my structures are either based loosely on structures I have seen of have seen pictures of, or completely out of my head. I have used just about any material avaiable but for many years my preferred material is sheet styrene. A good source of drawings is old model railroad magazines. Back in the 40's and 50's those magazines were much more into scratchbuilding than they are today. Here's an example. Back in the early 50's I was in the Air Force and I was building HO scale structures out of a small work box in my foot locker. Model railroader ran an article with drawings for making a nice signal tower. I built it back then and I still have it (minus a broken stairway). A couple of years ago I got out that 1956 magazine and enlarged the drawings to 1/24 scale. The orriginal model was made from various card stocks but the 1/24 scale model was made from sheet styrene. You can see the difference from HO to H scale in the photo of the unpainted model, that little thing is the tower in HO scale.

Mark and Neil, Thanks for the nice words, much appreciated. Before I go any further I must say that what inspired me to start this thread was the really great modeling over on Ray Dunakin's thread. Thanks Ray!! I posted a photo of this drugstore there so I'll start with that model. This is purely freelance. Photo 1 shows the styrene masters for the columns, wall sections top and bottom between columns, window frames, and dentil pieces. (column first turned on lathe, then built up with styrene). The blue is the rubber moulds and then the resin copies. Second photo show the shell of precision board with the resin pieces applied. Third photo is the unpainted structure, all sheet styrene.

Man, I hadn't realised how much larger the 1:24 models are than HO.

How did you make the airship envelop for http://santmod.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=20106326 ? I have something similar I'd like to try but can't decide how is best to make the gas bag.

I forgot to mention, this structure was built as a shell which slips down over the completed interior. Here are a few shots of the completed structure and interior shots.
Most of the furniture in the Doctor's office and waiting room is modified 1/2 scale doll house furniture, I did have to scratch things like the scale and exam table. Eveerything downstairs is scratbuilt.

Neil, The bag was carved from basswood and then covered with A+B epoxy putty and the lines scribed in before the putty set. I think I pressed a piece of cloth against the putty to give it some texture. that model has two wood dowels sticking out the back to mount it in the display.

Really great work, Bob! I checked out your website too, you do a lot of terrific stuff. I thought your name sounded familiar, and now I know why. I've seen some of your work in Garden Railways, and the Gazette too, if I remember correctly. Very inspiring!

HO sure looks small when it sits next to 1/24 scale!

Those are very nicely detailed interiors. Is that a reflection of the photographer in the mirror?

Yes George, That's me. I angled the mirror slightly, pulling the top forward, just to avoid that but I guess I did not angle it enough.
