Nice modification, Bill, and I can see the scenery developing in my mind.
BTW, there is a coal company with a setup much like yours not too far from me. Unbelievably, it is still standing. Anyway, on the exit side of the structure, they extended the track a bit by adding two wooden bents and mounted the track bumper outside the structure. I guess it gave them some flexibility on lining the hoppers up with the various coal bins. |

Ralph, I couldn't figure out why, when I took new photos, they wouldn't load either. I opened them in Picasa and that's where I noticed the resolution increase. Changed the camera settings back to VGA 640 x480 and they loaded.
Bruce, I believe you are correct in your track extension theory. Most of these structures were built when 50-70 ton twin hoppers were in common use at the time. Then came the triples and quad hoppers. As the cars got longer and heavier they also moved the discharge openings on the cars. These don't line up as well as the twin hopper discharge chutes do with the way these were built.
Is it possible for you to snap a couple of photos of the structure and the surrounding area near the structure so we could take a look at that? That might be a neat modification idea to ponder for this scene. I do have a little room at the end.
Here's photo from a different angle. I have seen these plopped right down next to a stream or pond.

10-30-11 Started construction of the double track South Hartford loop around the outside of the helix. This is the sub roadbed going in and it will become the actual Hartford passenger station.
This is on the outside of the helix.

This shot comes out of the furnace room into daylight. The 'Hartford Tunnels' will be here.

This is the loop in the furnace room. It will not get scenery but I will be able to monitor it from the work bench/Dispatchers area.

The curve radius will be 36 and 38" broadening to 40" and 38' for a short distance then back to 38" and 36". There will be three track in the station and an express track. |

Update. I added the Calf. roadbed down on the approach to the 'Hartford Tunnels' area. I have another box on the way. I got about half way through in the furnace room and ran out of roadbed.

Bill, here are a few quick shots of the coal dealer near me. Someplace I have a shot of the 'exit' end of the shed with the rail extension, but I'm having trouble finding it. I will keep trying.
The side towards the coal/lumber yard.

The rail side.

Here are a few photos of the roadbed down and painted and a plan of the South Hartford area

The plan is hand drawn not CAD. When you face So. Hartford it will be from the top of the photo. That is where the isle is.

Completed the loops and the station area. Here are a few photos of the track work. I took them while the glue was still drying on some of the track.
This is an overall view of the South Hartford area. The rest of the photos are of the Hartford Station area and the express track.

Hi Bill, are you planning on elevating the track at the Hartford station?

Bill, I think Art Curren would approve of your Hartford Station. The Burlington Mills (Marryin'Sam's, Delta House, Funeral Parlor, etc) kit was one of his favorites to kitbash. You've done a nice job.

At the moment, no. I may in the future All I would really have to do is lower the benchwork some and put in an overpass over the road. I know Hartford tracks were elevated and the station at street level. I used to go down there a lot to the hobby shop by bus. The problem is the other two tracks going into the helix. I would have to put in bridges there to. I have thought about how I could do it. I will need some of the NE Brownstone for the abutments in a lot of places on the New Haven as that is what them mostly used in the 1920's for grade realignments. |

Thanks Don. Nice compliment. Right now it is a stand in. It is about the right size for the real Hartford station. That building, which I am going to have to scratch build, was pretty neat with its 'castle towers' on the corners. I may have to cast them. |

Bill,
I agree with Joe about the sweeping trackwork, it has a very natural flow. I've always admired helix builders and especially how you've incorporated the rest of the trackwork around the helix.

| Thanks Dave and Joe. I try and make the transition a smooth as possible. Looks like I got it right. Thanks for the nice comments. Tonight I will be installing the other auto reverer for the inside loop track around the outside of the helix. I have one connected up on the outside main and it works great. Just have to drop some more feeders and clean the new track that was installed. Then test with some trains. I should be able to get 25 car trains in there without a problem. |
