Tom,
I'm going to hold you to that op's session visit. Looking like mid October. If there's enough interest, I might do one Sat and one Sunday the same weekend. Will send out the call soon...........
See you there, oh, yeah, no hecklers!

DC&L number 1 is rolling, only needs a number and someone to fix that headlight! She's a re-gauged Arryo Mine RR number 5, with a new Banta cab, Grandt bell and headlight, and a few other minor details. I was a little slow with that conversion but all went well. Now, back to that ET&WNC hopper.....

Been procrastinating on the things I need to get done by working on some things I picked up at the convention. Side tracked by three FMW 26ft log cars.... brake rigging is taking for EVER!

Brian-
Nice logging skeleton car ... this car is long enough to throw off my count! How many of these will go up the mountain switchbacks at one time?
I see from your home page that you have almost filled all your operating positions, congratulations.
The flatlanders will be there to play trains in a few weeks!

Mark,
Now there are TWO logging areas, so a need for more cars. Also, I really do need to replace some of my older cars (built 25 years ago and too light). A long term project is to build a Clyde Iron Works Decker Loader for the second landing. (Like about the time you get all those A&D Stiff leg derricks done!)
Layout is ready to go, trains running well, making that claim is a sure fired way to have gremlins on op's day!
Looking forward the flatlanders visit!

Brian, looking forward to making the trek to the mountains in Oct. When Mark mentioned "flatlanders", you don't get no flatter than va beach! Those skels look slick! and can't help but notice the building behind with 3 slanted windows!.....here's an interesting question....why do the eastern structures have those slanted windows! (I know I asked this at every clinic in Hickory, but not much was forthcoming!) Maybe dad knows......tom |

Tom,
I don't know why some of eastern sawmills used the diamond style. If you look at the actual window, its the same window as a regular window just at an anlge. Ritter used this style on several mills, on some only on the lower set of windows (as on my sawmill). As suggested during the clinic, some think that it let more light in, easier to frame given the timber framing used in sawmills,..... my guess is that the framing might have been a bit more simple but I really don't know.

that last comment about the diagonal window placement was said with sarcasm! (I asked everyone I could about it at the convention and was probably bordering on being "a pain in the ass"....I should have used the [:-eyebrows]"wise guy" smilie...because I know I asked you about it in the middle of your clinic! tom |

Man! You and that guy who woke up from his nap in the middle of my presentation stating that the Valley Railroad was standard gauge, and in NY not West Virginia. Never mind we were talking about the NARROW GAUGE VALLEY RIVER RR! Hecklers, gotta love'em [:-banghead]

Tom Sullivan and I went up to Deer Creek Country last weekend to wear down the iron and move some coal and lumber. [:-thumbu]

I took a few quick photos of the latest revisions Brian has been working on. The coal loading tipple in Collins brings to mind Clifftop on the Manns Creek. Below Collins is a new staging yard.

Deer Creek has become a sawmill town with a simplified track arrangement.

Laurel is getting a new lumber drying kiln next to the planing mill.

The north end of Laurel has had the enginehouse moved and a dairy added. The entrance to staging is between the two.

And a new train ... the "slate run" hauls waste from the coal mines to a dump site.
Thanks to Brian for a fun op session on an awesome layout that keeps getting better!

the layout is looking really good.
do you know how the Manns Creek loaded hoppers at the strip dump tipple that you are modeling, did they spot 2-3 cars there for loading and come back to pick them up or did they use a locomotive to spot cars, fill the cars, then reposition more empties for loading, repeating until the tipple was empty? The reason I ask is because it there is a photo in the MC book that looks like they are loading several cars at a time under the tipple using a few cuts of cars. |

Jeff,
I don't know the answer to your question but I would guess by the train schedule that they were loading and returning with the loads. You should ask Ron Lane about this.

Its been a while since the last posting. I have spent a lot of time on the final section of the layout with the coal mine and another logging section. I'll post pictures when the scenery is father along.
Within the last week I managed to complete another bark car:

AND I pulled out a shay kit purchased at a Narrow Gauge Convention back before 1985. I guess it is time to learn how to solder. Thanks to a visit to Coaltrian last year and picking up some cool tips, I have finally decided to jump in. Its both really fun and aggravating. Managed to compete the front truck last night.

More to come.......
