Coaltrain,

Thanks, yes, it is real bark and twigs, ground up in a blender!

Quarryman,

There will be two log landings, one on Bear Mtn and another on North Mountain, just North of Collins (i.e., some real changes comming to Collins as well!)

Can't wait to have another ops session soon.

MinerFourtyNiner,

Thanks! Glad to have you follow. I've been silently following your thread as well. Like it!

Brian

Been working on some changes.

New staging area under Collins

The mine scene now has a 4% grade up over the staging yard.

Some tracks and structures got moved around in Laurel, sans scenery.....

The planer mill is slowly coming along.....

Cheers!

wow, those are some big changes. I would love to see an updated track plan. I did not know you were planning a staging yard, that will really expand operations.

I see that Mann's Creek engine house found a spot. how come you removed the turntable, do you not need to turn engines anymore?

Wow, Brian. Some changes is right [:-bigeyes]

I see a building by the new staging yard. Are you going to put scenery in there? It looks like you might still have a continuous running connection.

Can the entire coal train make it up the switchback? How does the coal train reach Collins? Does it come from Deer Creek? [:-boggled]

Coaltrain,

The turntable was used when this part of the layout was 2 ft. shorter, I couldn't get a reasonable radius to get into the engine house without it. Since I don't turn loco's as the prototype didn't (BS&C) I don't need to turn them and this way I add a team track to Laurel.

Mark,

No scenery in the staging. Just staging junk.....

I kept the continuous run for 1) my son likes to watch trains go round and round (he's not into switching at this age) and 2) its occasionally nice for something completely different. It has a costly 6% grade but that falls within the prototype as well.......

Yes, an entire coal train can be pushed up the grade and into Collins. The engine must run around in Deer Creek. Trains still come from Deer Creek, across the dropgate and up the grade to Collins. There is a switchback in Collins going up grade even more to a log loading site. Trackplan to come.........

Brian,
Looking good! I think you did an excellent job of blending the backdrop into the scenery at Luarel.

I like the new twisty plan at Collins, that should make some fun switching. the "run around and shove" move is a nice way to add some interest to the switching as well and a good way to slow down the work.

thanks for posting the plan.

Well, its September 1st and the Narrow Gauge Convention is a week away. Since the organizers forgot to post the clinic schedule, I thought I would do some shameless self promotion.

If you have an interest in eastern logging and narrow gauges in the Appalachain mountains, I will be presenting on Wed evening at 9:00 and 8:30 Friday morning in Room H.

"Sample of Narrow Gauge & Logging Railroads in the Mountains of Virginia & West Virginia" by Brian Bond

Many narrow gauge railroads existed in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Some were common carriers that also served logging and/or mining industries, such as the Laurel Railway, the Big Sandy & Cumberland, the Valley River and the Cairo and Kanawha. This clinic will show pictures and share information on these railroads and their associated industrial activities.

Mark Chase, i.e. quarryman will be presenting Modeling Soap Stone RR's on Thursday at 9:00pm Saturday at 8:30am in room F.

Be sure to check the schedule when you get there as this information is based off a tentative schedule sent to clinicians and NO has been informed what the actual schedule is .........yet..........

I hope to meet some of you there and get to put a face with a name.

Cheers!

Brian
