A little progress this weekend as mom and the little guy were visiting her parents.

Lettered, lightly weathered, and put the windows in my modified (On3 and shortened) Bachmann coach and combine. Did the same to the milk car. Weathered two locomtives and started a passenger shelter (picture when its done).

Thanks for the progress report, I look forward to them.

Brian, great looking passenger train, that shot on the bridge reminds me of a pic I have seen with a shay pulling a passenger train.

Jeff,

While I have some Grandt Line passenger trucks, I decided to try and modify the Bachmann trucks. I used two different methods to accomplish this. It seemed a waste to scrap the trucks.

Method 1: Cut the holes mounting the side frames to the bolster and make them slotted, then insert NWSL wheels with pointed axle ends. Done! They seemed a little wobbly so I added some CA glue at the connection to hold them together.

Method 2: Since wheel sets are so expensive (New NWSL wheelsets are now $15.00-$17.00), why not try to modify them as they come? Sure! So I pulled the wheels out to 3ft gauge and then filed the inside of the frames till the wheels fit. This required from test fitting and more filing to make sure the wheels did not contact the frames and cause a short. While I really didn't think this method would work out, ultimately they run fine. I like the look of method #2, although maybe a hybrid method might be best, widen the side frames just a little and file some on the back sides as well, kind of a middle of the road fit.

I just regauged my Bachmann On30 shay to On3 and one pair of SJCC On30 trucks. I got a little crazy and sawed the axles in half and inserted them into a brass tube to make the wheel sets wider on both. The Shay trucks were easy because the side frames are already at On3 width and I just had to modify the bevel gear and the file down the insides of the side frames. The SJCC trucks required me to make new bolsters.

Jeff,

That sounds cool. I haven't tried to convert the shay yet. The idea of cutting the gears and remounting scares me a bit. Did you use the Wiseman method?

As for widening the passenger car frames and filing them. You would have to make new axles if you widen the frame. The current width works with the On30 axles and widened wheels. You could likely get new bolsters from SJC if you wanted.

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to head up to the mountains this week and visit the Deer Creek and Laurel.

Caught lots of activity early in the morning at the Laurel depot as the daily mixed was being assembled for the run up to Collins.

Train time in Laurel! [:-thumbu]
The Mixed holds up in the clear for the arrival of the morning passenger train down from Collins.

I just managed to catch the Mixed out on the line at one spot while driving up to Deer Creek to catch it there.

The Mixed was tied up in Deer Creek with switching for a long time.

A town has filled the little hollow around the extract plant, and the narrow gauge is picking up new shippers.

Not long after the Mixed cleared out, the afternoon passenger train showed up in Deer Creek.

It was getting late, so I headed back down to Laurel. When I got there, the grade crossing was blocked by an outbound coal train! [:-thumbu]

I grabbed something to eat at the boarding house, then watched as the outgoing log train pulled a long rake of rattling, bouncing log racks out of town, headed for Bear Mountain.

Bringing the end to a great day. Thanks to Brian for an excellent day of running trains on the Deer Creek & Laurel.

Grrrrrreat work and really like the pics. Your landscape is a perfect cannidate for a grassmaster. Do you get up this way, if so let me know and you can have a ride on my RR.

thanks for the updated pictures, I just love the layout.

As for regauging the shay, it was not really hard at all. first I cut the axles in half, then I got some brass tubing with the same ID as the OD of the axles. I used the edge of a mill file to raise some splines on the axle halfs and used some ACC to keep them tight in the brass tubes. Then I filed down the bosses on the passive side side frames until they were almost level with the inside of the side frames.

the large bevel gears are hollow about halfway through, I cut off all the hollow part and carfully ran them on a file until I hit the bottom of the hole in the back of the gear, if you pop on off and look at the back you will see what I mean. Doing it this way removes too much gear thickness but it was the only way I could see to do it some the back of the gear is parallel with the front. I used disk of styrene to bring the gears back out to mesh with the small bevel gears. To keep the large bevel gears from spinning on the axle i drilled holes in them using the locating holes in the back of the wheels as a guide. I used short pieces of brass rod as locating pins.

It didn't take me long to do it, I would say under two hours, most of that time was used trying to figure out how to do it. I am hoping that Grandt line or NWSL (or anyone) will make new axles and a conversion kit some day.

Some recent progress.

I pulled out my two three way switches and came up with a better track plan at Deer Creek. The sawmill was moved to Deer Creek and a planer mill/kiln facility will now be located at Laurel. This follows the BS&C prototype and was a suggested way to increased traffic by Quarreyman, aka, March Chase.

My old engine house was cut down to a single staller and the mill expanded. Log pond to come....

The planing mill has been started, lots of windows, roofing and docks to go!

None of this has prevented trains from a running......

thanks for the update, I like the new track arrangement. I just checked your website and noticed you made some progress on the scenery around the logging area, looks really good, what are you using for ground cover, is it real bark?

Brian-

Looks like you have really changed things around ... almost a new layout! Logs will now go from Bear Mt. to Deer Creek, and rough cut lumber from Deer Creek to Laurel, is that right?

Can't wait to see it in person,

Mark

Brian, I finally came across this thread, and wow - nice layout! You have captured the beauty of Virginia and W. Virginia with great scenery (I especially like your bridges and rock cuts). Very nice work, it makes me miss my railfanning trips back in the late '80s when NS was running its steam excursions along the old N&W across Virginia and up to Bluefield. Those were great days!

Best wishes on the continued progress, I will be checking in often and will enjoy seeing more unfold over time.
