The photo of your son using the file is priceless! Glad to hear things are getting back to normal.
The little loco and the shay look fantastic. Keep up the good work! |

Took a break last week to do some mountainbiking in one of my favorite biking and train places, Colorado
Here I am with my brother on the Monarch Crest Trail, which just happens to go across the old D&RGW near Marchall Pass. The trail follows the Continental Divide and hits over 11,000ft. Great descent down to Poncha Springs. Lets just say I'm the heavier one....

We drove over Boreas Pass from Breakenridge to Como and found this old boxcar at the pass. Those C&S guys were BRAVE!

While in Fairplay, we stayed at the old 1873, Fairplay-Valiton Hotel just up the street from the Fairplay station.

Our last day we headed out from Kenosha Pass, near the old C&S Wye (they have re-laid portions of it just off I-285) and over Georgie Pass with great views of the South Park.

With 3600ft of climbing above 9,000 ft, it was tough on us old eastern boys but since it was an out an back, that meant for 3,600ft of downhill!![:-bigeyes2]
Oh well, back to work....... [:-crazy] |

that looks like a fun trip. You should have brought some of your dogs to pull you up those hills |

More time on the shay this week.
Its slowly coming together. Now I have to go back and put all those things I skipped, onto the locomotive.

Here is a slightly better picture of the modified Grandt Line porter with Wiseman tender. Looks like I need better lighting for side pictures on the layout!

Marty, all my other pictures are biking and scenery while biking. No more train stuff. I have hours and hours of video shot by my brother using a handlebar camera! Great stuff for remembering what it was really like rather than my selective memory.....

Somehow missed the mountain biking pics. Looks like a beautiful place to ride. Definitely a serious workout climbing all that elevation. [:-thumbu] |

Brian-
I showed your mountain biking post to a coworker who has family in Denver. He rode his bike up above 9000 feet, and says he really had trouble catching his breath. Kenosha Pass makes the Virginia Creeper trail look like a piece of cake.
You are putting together an awesome locomotive fleet. Both the Shay and the Porter have unique proportions. Looking forward to seeing them in person.
Will be heading up to Galax for the Fiddler's Convention on Thursday.

Been a while since the last post.
Joe, that's a Precision Scale, Silver City shay, not the Kemtron is MUCH larger....(42 tons rather versus 22 tons). There's a nice Pochie and Pacific 28 ton shay on ebay right now. Nice kit, much is already done for you. Santa Barbara Tie and Pole Shay.....
Been working on three miner's homes for Collins, based on several I found in WVA coal town picture books.

Also, finally started painting my big PSC Climax. Had to pull it out of the paint shop not quite done, for last weekend's operations session.

Will try to post some more pictures soon......

That Climax looks really good painted, what kind of paint do you use to paint your brass locomotives?
I also like the house, I see it is sitting on a drawing, was that your design? |

Jeff,
I like Floquil enamel paints but used Polly Scale for a base coat and Floquil for weathering on this one. Everyone seems to have their favorite. I have lots of difficulty using waterbased paints. Trying to figure out how to use them better.
The house is my own design based on three structures I found in Coal Towns of West Virginia Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Stan Cohen and Mary Legg Stevenson. Most houses in these towns are larger but I did manage to find several prototypes that were small. The design went through four renditions. Started out with what I thought was prototype dimensions, and kept modifying to get what "looked"right and what fit the space. Can send'em to you if interested, AutoCAD files.

Finally, an update.
Jeff, the walls of the one house are cardboard. The others are Northeastern clapboard siding (wood).
Finished a stock loading rig for deer creek, they get an occasional load of cows and a horse now and then.

The extract plant, chipper house and boiler room are slowly coming together. Shipping both liquid and powdered extract. Lots of frieght traffic com'n and go'n.
