I thought I'd post some of the layout progress that's occured during the last few months.
Here's the boarding house at Laurel, almost done, just need to finish the roof and set the porch in place. Its based on the boarding house originally located at Fontana, NC when R.E. Wood was running a sawmill and logging railroad there.

Here's a picture of the original. The model is condensed but gives the overall feel.

Here's Climax # 1 comming down grade with a load of logs. Its nice to have the trackwork done! Download Attachment: Climax #1.jpg 106.05 KB
I tore out the gorge and re-did it. I think its closer to what I had envisioned. Hoping to get the rock coloring done this weekend.

The coal mine is waiting for tar paper roofing. The workers should be showing up any day now...

The number 7 pulls a string of modern steel hoppers. Easy conversions of Bachmann On30 hoppers.

It's a forum software bug, Brian. For this reason, many people try to write only shorter first posts. Nice start on your layout. Do you have a plan for it? |

Frederic,
Thanks for the info on posting.
The track plan is posted on my website on the page: Deer Creek and Laurel Ry: Current Layout
Click on the fuzzy plan and it will give you a slightly large but definatel more clear plan.
Happy Model Building!

| Thanks for the link to the plan, Brian. Is there any connection planned between the layout and the smaller one on the opposite wall? |

Frederic,
I get that question often. Actually, the layout against the far wall in my On30 Arroyo Mine RR. You can see an explination, pictures and layout plan on the website link to "The On30 Arroyo Mine RR Layout". Its loosely based on some Nevada prototypes so it doesn't fit well with the Appalachain On3 layout. I have actually expanded it another 4 feet in length (had to add another mine and enginehouse!)
I never planned to use this much space in my odd shapped layout room. My work bench used to be there, which is why the layout was never planned for the whole room. I have drawn up plans for a whole room layout but don't have the desire to expand at this time.
I'd really like to actually finish what I have in the current plan first. While it may not seem that large, this size layout is rather time consuming and I'm a LONG way from getting the buildings completed and the scenery done. I'm really looking forward to actaully completing the Laurel section of the layout.
Hopefully the next batch of pictures will actually include some scenery, weathering, and detailing.
Cheers!

Layout(s) are looking good! Like to see the expanded On30 plan -- a little longer slice of Nevada!

Been work'n on the railroad. I decided that if I was ever going to do this minor expansion, it had to be done before starting any scenery. Too much mess otherwise.

I used a new roadbed technique that I read about on the RailroadLine forum. It usese homosote as spline for the roadbed. I have never used the spline technique before and it worked out very well. I aslso tried using cardboard strips and plaster cloth for the hard shell. I love the plaster cloth technique but will likely go back to screen for the hardshell base. I get my plaster cloth from Gerry's Artaroma. It's significantly cheaper than other sources.

By turning Laurel 90-degrees and covering the second entrance door, I was able to gain back significant yard space. Not only did I gain the section previously cut out so the door could open (about 30 -inches) but I gained another 14-inches in length. I also added a second three foot track to hold cars. These changes will signficantly improve operations. Currently all the track connnecting the railroad is back in operation; However, I need to finish one switch and the two yard tracks at Laurel.

To increase operations I have started construction on two more bark cars. Here is the first one, an easy project to complete as I had one too many flat cars anyway. The second flat is finished, I just need to add the bark rack - temporarily on hold untill the changes at Laurel are done |

Great progress, Brian. Thanks for posting the photos.
I noticed on your revised trackplan what seems to be a track crossing the entrance to the new yard on a diagonal. Is that a standard gauge transfer? Are you going to handlay crossings?
Have you gotten together with Dr. Sullivan in Roanoke yet? He threw quite a Meet a few years back. Hopefully he will do it again sometime soon.
My work hours may change this summer allowing me to once again snoop around the New River and Greenbrier Valleys occasionally. Would love to see your layout in person.

Mark,
Thanks for the note. Actually, there is some three rail track with four switches, all handlaid. Its the 2nd track in Laurel. The crossing you refer to is actually the section that was cut out for the door, that's why its a radius. I forgot and left it in the CAD file. However, it does demonstrate how much space was gained.
All trackwork was finished this weekend and back to operating/tuning up.
I haven't seen Henry in quite a while. The On30 group in Roanoke had made lots of progress last I was there. Its been more than 9 months though. They meet during the week, which is difficult for me. Sent Henry an email a few weeks ago and haven't heard back.
Let me know if you are ever in the area. I'd be glad to have you over. Thought of having an "open house" or operating session this summer. Drop me a note when you think you'll be up this way.
How's Tom, I haven't seen anything from him in a while. I trust he converted to Maine stuff?

Working on the Railroad again. Here's the latest update.

The bridge isn't done yet as I need to finish the backdrop and pour the creek but it gives you an idea......
With the Arroyo Mine RR gone, I had an empty space in the layout room begging to be used. While I really wanted to get into some scenery work, I decided if I am going to expand that it should be done first. You know, all that dust and all.
While I had never designed the layout to include a continuous loop, it now has one. I still rund point to point, passing the loaded mine cars back through to Collins. However, guests often like to see trains go in circles.....
Also, I removed the mine from Hawley Junction, makes the scene look much better and now have the large mine in Collins. Well, when I build it there will be a large mine there.

I use a drop gate to get across the doorway. I would have preferred a swing gate but didn't think there was enough room.

All the trackwork is done, wiring etc. Trains run great. FINALLY, time for some structures and scenery.

Oh yeah, anyone up for an operating session?[:-bouncy] |
