Arizona has had mining all over the place...gold, silver, copper, mercury, iron...it's a big part of the state's heritage.
I have modeled Northern Arizona and Colorado, and would enjoy trying New England as well. But I have lived most of my life in the Sonora Desert (Phoenix area) and it's like a part of me now. Because it is different, and rarely modeled, I chose this region for the challenge and novelty. I want people to feel warm just looking at the photos! [:-cowboy]
I encourage others to try a different look or unique area as well...there are many On30 stories to tell, and mine will be about copper and the gritty men who mined it. |

| Thanks, Larry...I have not had time to work on the layout itself, I am building some rolling stock for friends right now. I hope to get to completing my DCC install between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and to begin painting the backdrop and building scenery this winter. I can't wait to see it begin to take shape, I am getting tired of looking at styrofoam! |

Hey Verne --
Looking real good there ... [:-thumbu] ... like the contrast between the first scene, in which the railroad is in the foreground ... and the town scenes, where the railroad passes almost back stage.
Looks like a real nice layout of the town ... the buildings, horses and "characters" who populate will no doubt give it lots of flavor! [:-cowboy] [:-timebm] [:-hot]

Hey Verne,
Good to see you're back.. That town is looking nice, you've got that southwestern look right down to the stucco brick. Have you seen the southwest theme stuff that Scenery Express has?

Dallas, I am using the town as a 'scenic element' and wanted the buildings right up front to show off the detail. I like mocking up their location before building them so I can anticipate what will go where. I have lots of characters to populate this town, including a bunch of desperados and pistoleros who will keep the Sheriff busy. My intent is to set up the main street as a kind of stage for different characters and vehicles, which I can vary whenever I want.
Thank you Arthur...I have indeed seen the latest from Scenic Express, but in true Southwestern spirit I plan to 'roll my own'!
Arnold, I can't wait either! I am reall looking forward to completing the buildings, figures and vehicles to make the town live. I have a small collection of figures I will modify for the town, incluidng three Apache renegades I will have busting a compadre out of jail!

Verne, That is going to be a perfect town for an Arizona layout, just the right size. Will there be a town some place on the layout built into a hill like Jerome? Larry

| Let me add my voice to others' to say how pleasant both the trains and the soon-to-be town look in these pictures. I'm sure you'll have a great town once all this white plaster has received its coat of paint and weather. |

Thank you...
Larry, I originally wanted to do a town on a hillside, but two considerations nixed that idea early on. In O, I would need at least 4 feet of depth in a scene to pull it off in the manner I'd want to do it, and my shelf layout design doesn't provide adequate space. Secondly, I decided to make that disadavantage a plus by using the town as a scenic element right in the face of viewers, with the railroad running around behind the town...emphasizing the details, and providing close access to view the structures. If I were modeling in the same space in HO, a town on a hill would be a real possiblity...I love Jerome, Bisbee, etc. and that would be a great effect.
Thank you for your positive comments Frederic, I am afraid most of the accomplishments on my model railroad lately have been the 'visualization' variety, a lot of fun work is ahead building the town! |

Hey Verne, All this talk of desperados and renegades makes me think of ol' Malcolm Furlow. It's nice to see someone being creative and having fun on a layout instead of worrying about schedules and train orders and what type of locomotive was assigned to train number 62 on August 13th in 1956.

Arnold, we don't need no stinking timetables... ;o)
My main street will look more like a 'spaghetti western' than the typical model railroad town...
PS, very nice layout, Arnold. It reminds me of the visits to the deep South in the late 80s...you have nailed the flavor of the area. |

You're right, Verne. It's gonna be a lot of fun work. FUN. And for us, a lot of pleasure to watch your progress.
Arnold, what a shame!!! Don't you know that on August 13th in 1956, train number 62 was cancelled?
