I have started some work on scenery for a few areas of the layout:
Here is the Apache Wells yard...first I applied latex paint (I use the discards/returns from the home improvement store to save $$$). Then came the tile grout as groundcover and ballast, with real dirt and fine gravel from the Apache Trail in central Arizona for texture.
Here is the same area after putting down the basic groundcover. The bare trees will eventually get foliage.
The area in the background will feature a row of coke ovens or charcoal kilns, hence the cinders all around. I have a lot of experimentation to do to reproduce the saguaros, ocotillo, cholla, etc. to make the desert come alive...and the backdrop awaits. Still, it beats bare styrofoam!
A friend's 2-6-6-2 tries out the light rail on the E&SG. She makes my tight curves just fine, and the E&SG management is considering acquiring one for its mine trains.
More to come as time permits! |

Excellent! Very nice. Don't forget the Scenic Express line of desert scenery. Also you may want to refer to Frederick's Arizona diorama for more ideas?

| Great start. Have you ever described the tank car in the foreground anywhere on the forum? I would like to make one. Roland |

And I noticed the cabless locomotive in the same photo. Looks like more than just scenery going on at the E&SG.
Great start on the scenery ... very dusty and dry. [:-hot][:-toast]

Thank you for your comments, I was going for that desert 'dry-mouth' feel.
Roland, the tank car is an HO AHM old time tank car with modified frame, new ladders and dome. The hose is solder, and the valve is from a Walthers piping kit. Trucks are International Hobbies. I have more pics on the Models page of my site, here are a few:

Arthur, thanks for the tip...and Frederick's diorama was beautifully done. I want to try making my own cactus, desert trees, etc.
Mark, thanks...that cabless locomotive is a 4-4-0 that supposedly cracked her frame in a derailment, and is now the steam supply for the Apache Wells pumphouse. A sad ending to an elegant steamer, to be set on a side track. She will get a metal roof over her and an extended stack, and will supply steam to the adjoining stone pump house to keep the water supply flowing. There was a prototype for this arrangement in Saltillo, Mexico. I'll post the photo when I get a chance. Her tender will ride behind a chopped Forney when I get time to do the conversion!
Geezer, with my small layout, that 2-6-6-2 could pull a string of ore cars as long as the main line...chasing the caboose so to speak! It is a sweet runner, and I want one!

| Verne. Nice work, and like the idea of the coke ovens. The artic is appealing. Wonder how she'd look hauling coal trains on the Gauley River? |

| The scenery looks really good already. Keep up the good work, just make sure it's not all flat. IMO there should be some small humps and hollows around the place so it doesn't look like the table-top-central. |
Built a waterfront HO layout in Ireland http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22161 but now making a start in On30 in Australia |

The new scenes are very nice, Verne. The desert is beautifully rendered. Interesting tank car, too.
